454 oil cooler valving in oil filter mounting boss?

I have a forward control 1T Chevy chassis, 1985, Chev 454 engine and Holley 4 BBL. It has external oil cooler in the radiator, connected to the side oil cooler ports on the LH pan rail. One fitting has the plastic diverter plastic probe in it. The original engine was replaced 13 years ago with a factory-new Chevy 454.
My question relates to excessively high oil temps: This engine has consistently run with very high oil temps, as high as 300+F. I have never had any problems with it, over 15,000 miles of long-haul use. I have removed the temp sender and verified it is accurate, in hot water using its own gauge. I have not been able to measure the engine oil flow rate in the 3/8" diameter aluminum oil lines to the radiator cooler, but they both get VERY hot to the touch, after idling 20-30 mins. Oil temp gauge then says about 220F. I have verified no blockage in the radiator-mounted cooler or the lines connecting it. Engine COOLANT temps have never been excessive, never over half scale, on this truck even on long desert grades in summer, while oil temp gets wayy up there. I use only Mobil 1 full synthetic oil, which is supposedly good for well over 350F, but I don"t like seeing oil so hot.
I have obtained some information regarding changing of pressure valves which are located in holes in the engine"s mounting boss for the oil filter, from Scroggins-Dickey in N.C. But no one can tell me any details of replacing these valves (how are they removed/installed?), and I am cautious about doing anything when I have any doubt as to what it will accomplish. But am suspicious that perhaps some of these engines came from the factory with different valves installed in this location (in the oil filter mounting boss on the engine), depending on whether it was intended for using the external oil cooler connections, or not. I am not talking about use of an oil cooler "adapter" at the oil filter, but use of the side rail oil cooler ports. Do these internal valves under the oil filter relate to using the side rail oil cooler ports? If so, perhaps my engine does not provide for full oil flow through the cooler, and hence effectively has little or no oil cooling.
I am addressing this specifically to "Bob, Tractor Guru, since I have read his post here, dated April 14, 2011 with great interest".
Any help you may provide would be greatly appreciated; I"ve been looking for info for many months here.

I cant answer your question perfectly, but ran across the same thing on my 1989 454. My lines corroded, and I wanted to plug them. I don't do heavy pulling for long distances. 5 miles at most.

I ended up pluging the oil cooler outlets with no problems. You are asking about the "diverter disc" under the filter itself. I ended up finding some good information on a drag race forum. On mine, the lines were tapped directly into the oil pan rail. A guy posted the oil flow schematic so I knew how to plug/bypass. Doesnt directly answer your question, but maybe will point you in the right direction.

I was getting rid of mine though, little different.
