OK folks, got all your suggestions and been comparing to what's available here... Been looking on the internet tho cause I haven't had the time or people skills to go in a store yet... What I see (or don't see) with the new stuff is that they seem to have to be used with the monitor screen.... Those of you that have newer ones, can you turn off the monitor and look thru the peephole the old fashioned way?? If so, what brand do you have?

Thanks, Dave

Some work both ways, some don't. It is nice to have both, as the LCD viewer screen washes out BAD in direct sunlight.

I have had a Prosumer (high end non removable lense) Canon (about 575$ US), and I own a Sony DSC F828. The lense makes the camera. Bothe of these (and their newer reletives0 have view finder LCD and View Plate options by switching a toggle on the back. Jim

i"m looking at my digital camera if front of me, it"s a jvc model, has the flip open video screen, and also has the pull out peep hole viewer, had a chip for pics, and has a small cassette for viedo filming...

HI Dave I have a Cannon A620 that has a screen monitor and a view finder (peephole). You don't have to use the monitor if you don't want to. This is not a cheap camera, I think it was about $400 a few years ago. I suspect some of the cheaper cameras today don't have view finders but you'll only find out by shopping. If you go to a store like Future Shop they will help you find what you want. If you go to a camera store you'll wind with more than you need and something that may be difficult to use without a lot of studying the manual and practicing.

Dave, I recently purchased a Cannon SX30 IS online at Amazon. There is a new model of the same camera SX40 IS that has lots more bells a whistles that I will never use. The Pictures I have taken are great and the are a few that are outstanding. This is my fourth and last digital camera. I find Amazon to be the best value for cameras and the are prompt . By the way, I can take pictures up to 2 inches away and it has a 20X zoom I will never use. Has a rotatable screen and also a viewfinder if you no lika da screen. Brother Henry

Thanks Bro.... Forgot to mention cheap tho  Wife has 2 snooty cannons for all the fancy stuff. I want sumpin simple and reasonable priced that I can put in the pocket or throw in the car without being heartbroken if I break it....Looked at the camera you have tho and it's pretty neat....

Panasonic Lumix TZ range of compacts - constantly gets top rating in camera magazine & website reviews. I have 3 year old TZ5 with Leica lense, I've just won national photo competion using the automatic setting.

Well made, simple to use, always produces excellent pictures. Rechargable battery pack {I have mains charger and in-car charger}

Most newer compact digital cameras don't have the peep hole anymore. Try using one, you really don't need the peep hole. The video screens eat batteries, extra rechargable batteries and a fast class 4 or higher memory card help a lot. They are both around $6 to $15 on Amazon.com.

Most camera manufacturer's have a support section on their website that allows you to download owner's manuals of their current products and their older discontinued products going back ten years and more. That makes it very easy to to compare specifications and check if a specific model has the features you want.

Kodak shirt pocket cameras have worked well for me, a 2 year old M530 (no peep sight) and a ten year old DX4330 (larger with a peep sight). Kodak just filed for bankruptcy.

For better quality pictures I use a five year Pentax K10D Digital SLR because it can use any PK/A mount lens made from the mid-1980's to today. High quality used PK/A lenses sell for $15 to $50 in camera shops and ebay.

Good luck.

About a year ago I went looking for a camera to replace my Canon A1100IS that crapped out due to abuse. I couldn't find anything with a viewfinder. I find cameras without viewfinders to be next to useless. They're very hard to use in bright sunlight, and it's impossible to track a fast-moving target without a viewfinder.

I would go ahead and buy a digital SLR, but a camera isn't much good if you don't have it when you need it. I'm tempted to buy another A1100IS, (new ones are still available online), but I'm fed up with Canon and the dreaded "lens error".

Mine is a Cannon " Power Shot" A1000 IS. Had it four yrs and no problems. Enough options to confuse me but simple to use with view finder and/or peep hole. Have bat charger and belt carrying case so you CAN have it with you when you need it.

It looks like Canon still makes one pocket camera with a viewfinder, the A1200. Similar to my A1100IS that failed, but without image stabilization. At a street price of less than 100 bucks, I may have to get one.

To get a viewfinder on a Nikon compact camera, you have to go with the Coolpix P7000 or P7100, which are almost 500 bucks.

Olympus doesn't seem to offer anything.

Fuji offers viewfinders in its X series cameras, which look very nice; the X10 is around 500 bucks. Hmm. Maybe I have a Fuji in my future.

Kodak is just reorganizing, they may look a lot different as a company than they do now, but they will still be around.

I have a Canon Power Shot SX20IS that I like very much. It takes great photos, even from a moving car. It has 20X optical zoom and 80X digital zoom which is pretty amazing. I chose this camera because, Number One, it has the peephole viewfinder (as well as the screen). My close-up eyesight is not good enough that I can see what I’m shooting on the screen, and if the sun is bright it is totally useless. Number Two, it uses AA batteries. I don’t want to have bother with re-charging, and I don’t care how many AAs it burns through.
It is a bit bulky, and I’m probably going to get that $99 Canon A1200 MarkB mentioned just to have as a shirt pocket camera. I don’t know how to take pictures with my phone.

I have a Nikon D60 SLR. Much more of a camera than most people want or need. But I enjoy the ability to change the lens to really good telephoto when I want.

Down side is that it's big. Upside is it takes great pictures.

Rick

Dave, I use the Kodak C743. It's a 7.1 MP large color display (monitor) AND the eyepiece viewfinder. Which also works when Zooming. Fits in shirt pocket. Hooks up to front of my PC with simple BUS cord for easy upload. Or you can pop the SD card out. Uses 2 AA batteries. I use recargeable Kodak batteries and one set last months, on one charge. You can get the KODAK Easyshre software free online.
This is my third one. Lost the first dropped the second on the concrete floor.
They aren't made anymore so find one on ebay, max about 70 dollars. Try to get the manual and CD and accessories too.
