they hate tractors

there is a group on facebook called "Tractors are killers, get them off our roads."
here is their own description of what they are about:
"A good friend of mine and his girlfriend was killed yesterday 8/4/2010 in a bike accident involving a tractor.
They are too slow and big for our roads and hold up traffic causing frustration and other potential accidents.
Me and my wife once stopped to help a rider and pillion as a tractor had pulled into their path to turn into a field.
TAKE THEM OFF THE ROADS BEFORE MORE PEOPLE ARE HURT OR KILLED"

While I can understand their frustration losing someone, going to that length to avenge the death is way overboard.

Not in America, either! Says Selby, UK for location.

only 32 members since forming in 2010, so it isn't as big a sensation as BOO the cute little dog. Unless one of the members is a lawmaker or lobbyist there shouldn't be anything for us to worry about.

Wow, "frustration" is an accident?

If you copied that wording verbatim from the website, this is just some grief-addled raving lunatic. He will never get any traction with his crusade because he can't put out a coherent message.

When you're trying to get something outlawed you need to convince your audience that it is a good idea, not convince them that you are an illiterate, scatter-brained, bat-$*it crazy wack-a-loon.

And if you asked the same group if they know where their food comes from, they would tell you, "the grocery store." From what I have noticed when driving tractors on the road, the public needs to attend a mandatory driver education program before they get their license.

The biggest problem with alot of these bike groups is they think they own the road and everyone has to get out of there way! I have seen simis have to lock up there brakes on a state hi-way because 25or 30 of them blow a stop sign so they dont have to stop as a group! They need to go by the trafic laws too, Just because your on a bike dosent mean you can do whatever you want. With that said as equipment gets bigger and bigger and manufactures make them go faster and faster there needs to be some commond sence the driver needs to use while going down road. Bandit

I'll second the "we own the road bicyclers" issue. We have a $27 million bike trail in our area and they still ride mostly on the roads here. Personally I think they should have to have a Scooter class liscense and carry liability insurance on that bike they are riding.

While I certainly don"t know the details of this case, I think it"s fair for me to say I hate people. Well, maybe not totally, but more and more. How weak and ignorant our society is becoming is down right scary.

mkirsch,
words between quotes are copied verbatim from the
site, as you correctly guessed.

The picture they use is a paved narrow European
country lane with a QuadTrac and fold-up tillage
tool taking up all of it and little Euro cars
behind it taking up only their side of the road.
Could be photo-shopped, although Europe is known
for oxcart sized roads and wheelbarrow sized
autos.

We could easily steer this discussion to the
urbanization of societies, the need for food
production, the very small number of farmers, and
the resulting need for gargantuan equipment. The
rest of the industrialized world benefits from
American and Canadian sized equipment. But they
lack the infrastructure (public roads) the new
world has. etc.

this all started when I was searching on Facebook to see if Yesterday's Tractors has a Facebook page!

Those people aRE f@#$%&g idiots.I have never seen a tractor(or a gun) kill anyone!I'e known of a few people who have been killed while useing a tractor, but it's ALWAYS "operator error"(again, read idiot).Thats as bad as the"guns kill people" crowd. We all know that the problem is our society is becomeing so "urbanized" that people now view farners as an unnessary "pain in the butt",rather a "food producer".Like it was said, the drivers licence bureau now needs to teach a'cuarse'of study on how to handle wide, slow traffic, constrction workers, accidents on the road;anything that is a hazard or impedes the flow of traffic.I should stop now as I could write pages....Steve

Lets change a few words here.A good friend of mine and his girlfriend were killed yesterday 8/24/2010 in a bike accident involving a car. They are a way to slow and little for our roads and hold up traffic causeing frustration and other potential accidents. I THINK ALL CARS SHOULD BE BANNED FROM ROADWAYS BEFORE MORE PEOPLE ARE HARMED AND KILLED. If we do this than I guess we can rename roadways to just bikeways. Just food for thought. If tractors cant get from one field to the other There wont be any food to eat let alone food for thought.

The problem is people don't pay attention. I haul fertilizer in small buggy's. I have a slow moving sign, reflector tape, reflectors and warning signs all over the thing.Still people come close to hitting me.
I saw a tractor almost take out a car last month. Warning signs all over it. Turned on his left blinker. The idiot in the car tried to pass. Ended up in the ditch. So we all stop to help Mr. Idiot out. It was suggested to him. That maybe he should stay off the phone while driving.

I may be reading between the lines too much, "Guy and his girlfriend" makes me think that maybe he had a "crotch rocket" of coarse they wont run on two wheels or under 60 MPH.

Funny to see tractors are killers like guns ?

Drivers that think they are the best usually wind up in accidents. main rule of the road is to keep your vehicle under control.

I'm an ex Biker guess I been lucky only dropped one and my fault.( being stupid)

When you mentioned UK, well yeah. Some roads are over 1000 years old, and barely 100 inches wide. The average equipment is the same widths are North America, and bikers there like to go fast, very fast and very loud. The poster himself said farm equipment makes people 'impatient'. That's it in a nutshell...

more of that group of people that think all their food come from the grocery store, have no clue tha the farmers are feeding them. kj

Reminds me of that story. That wanted the dairy down the road shut down. Because if people wanted milk. They should go to the store where it is made and get it.

What's new? I have had FIVE accidents making a left turn into my farm lane. Latest was an idiot on a motorcycle who passed a car before he laid it down. I just saw him in time to hit the brakes. He wound up just in front of the rear tire of the tractor, his bike about three feet in front of the no til coulters on the grain drill. The left turn signal was on, and the car was waiting for me to complete my turn. Several cars have done a 'General Lee' across my lawn and the neighbors' lawn. One ran into the side of the manure spreader; another sliced her car open from the hood to the trunk going under the loader. One hit the rear tire on the tractor, and another took off the combine ladder. And now the county wants to develop a master plan to put bicycle lanes along the roads. Your tax dollars being frittered away for a small 'elite' group with a lot of whine.

I got the county to put a warning sign down the road a couple of hundred yards before the farm entrance, and I put a big (liberated, of course) 'No Passing Zone' sign in my front yard and it has done little, if any, good. I don't think the fools can read. So, just do what my grandkids do. Get a little book of stickers from 'Cars'. Every time there is another accident with a tractor around here, they put another sticker on the side of the tractor, kind of like they did on fighter planes during the war when they shot down an enemy plane. I guess that makes me an "ace".

Guys the problem, as I see it here in Central Texas......The D@mn Bicyclist Think they OWN the Whole Road!! The will not give an inch when you need by them, or turn through their group of riders. They are as a whole inconsiderate of the cars and truck, AND tractors they share the road with.....
MY soultion,,,,,A set of Santa Fe Freight Train horns to get their attention, they will scatter out is short order!!!! or S#it their pants!
I have no use for them on the days when they have their bike routes out in the country.

The bicycles are what should be banned from the road. We have to drive tractors on the road, bicycles don't have to be there. I remember a few years ago I came around a curve in a tri-axle dump truck and there was a bicycle creeping up the hill. Luckily there was nothing coming so I just swerved around him, but if a car was coming I would have had 3 choices. 1-hit the idiot cyclist that didnt have sense enough to move over, not even to the edge of the road,2-hit car head on, kill them, or 3-go off steep bank, probably die myself. They're the real menace and have absolutely no need to be there.

Why dont we ban everything because somebody somewhere will be stupid and kill themselves.
Ban everything, tractors, bikes, guns, knifes, tall buildings, cars, trucks, scissors. Make it as safe as a padded room for toddlers.

(quoted from post at 10:01:19 01/27/12) our dogs (3)have more smarts than lots of people.
i think all towns of 10,000 people should be banned down as the bigger the town the more dumb the people.

Thing with that is then all the dumb a$$e$ would move out in the country and live right next to you.......ROFL

We are fortunate here to be in the Ozarks. Lots and lots of hills and really crappy back roads. I guess they are not too welcoming to the spandex set.

Sorry guys if our roads are so small, but then so is our country, and we have to produce food as cheap as possible and we don't have the luxury of your weather windows. In a nut shell we have small roads because ground is at a premium here and we have the tree huggers,on their environmentally friendly bikes, not allowing us to cut down centuries old trees to make roads wider. We have to haul all our produce from the fields by tractor as our ground is normally too soft to carry trucks,In the harvest season many farmers paint on the back of their grain carts....Sorry for going so slow , but remember this is your breakfast and bread that is causing the problem!.... Our tractors all travel at about 30 mph some even faster and it is still too slow. When I had a dairy farm and we had to cross the road with the cows, mornings were not so bad as we tried to miss the traffic, but no matter when you went in the evening you got people in a temper and rushing to get home to do nothing all evening!

I'm going to throw a bomb in the middle of this discussion. I'm a farmer AND a bicyclist. While I agree that there are cyclists who are arrogant and don't ride single file, I also want to point out that cyclists are at the mercy of every other vehicle on the road. I won't ride with people who won't share the road. Just because you don't ride a bicycle doesn't make cyclists the villains here. Bicycling in good exercise and doesn't pollute. If you want to name the dangerous ones, point to people in cars who won't slow down for a curve or a hill and always assume that their trip is the most important thing in the world and that there will never be a tractor, or deer, or cyclist in the road. And, just to be explicit here, I'm 63 and ride 100 miles a week. Let's go for a ride. It's really fun.

It seems that most did not notice that the guy is NOT a bicyclist but rather a MOTORcyclist. "Pillion" is sport-bike parlance for "passenger". Never mind the fact that the comments blaming bicyclists are totally off-base. Car-bicycle accidents, like car-motorcyclist accidents, are usually the fault of the automobile driver.

It is, of course, absurd to say that a bicycle going 15 mph is much of a hazard to a tractor going 15 mph. Of vice versa, for that matter.
