High Blood Pressure II

OK, Wife got the doctor on the phone.. Our normal doctor (one talked to the other day was sitting in for him)... Anyway, he was aggravated that the other one said wait. He asked what we were reading the BP with and laughed a little when she told him the wrist thing.... Said they were a crooked doctor's best friend... Said lay down for 30 minutes then take it with the arm at heart level (130/82), then set up and read back to back with arm at different elevations (unbelieveable).... Said to come in and let them check it and put me on a bike with EKG just to make sure. And to get an upper arm monitor( from a good source)/read the instructions.....

Trying to get in this afternoon.

Just took my pressure sitting at the computer.154 over 80.arm type monitor.Just had a cup of coffee.Beer last nite.Ive been going easy on salt for 3 years.Canned goods and lunch meats are loaded with salt.

to be on the safe side ,dont joke around about West Virginia anymore,I noticed you had a lot of things happen to you lately, could be a spell cast on you, It happend to Andy and Barney years ago and Barney got a book of mountain fokelore from the library so they could break the spell.

The home monitor readings are not like the bible. Pressure can vary so use common sense. Food and salt do have an effect, but not so much as you read and people talk. There is no doubt in my mind that you need pills, so work with your doctor. Mine made me come in each day while he tried to find the right medication. Been there, did that.

I was running 212/100+ in the mornings and was feeling bad.
After I finally forced myself to recognize the fact that I was no
longer 18 and pills are the way seniors survive, I went to the Dr.
and got some relief.

The worst time of day for me is in the AM before I take my pill.
This AM it was 149/80 72P. I can live with that. As the pill kicks
in it will drop to the 120's/60's. There are no side effects and
my lifestyle hasn't had to change to accommodate the
medication with the exception of part of the pill (the last half) is
to reduce water in your body to reduce the pressure on your
blood veins (referred to as a water pill)........Sooooo that means
you are somewhat of a potty hugger.......but with all else
considered, not that bad of a deal.

Medication is Lisinop/HCTZ 25 mg.

To ease things, for us seniors, I also accidentally found a product
named Urinozinc (R) Prostrate Formula which has a US Patent. I
take 2 ea twice a day. Has really, really helped and no trips to
the Dr. to mess you up if you know what I mean. Also has made
the potty trips function as they are supposed to, none of the
crisis things that occurred before taking this, you feel relieved
and fewer trips. Wally World sells it for about $10-14
depending upon whether you get the original formula or the new
with added ingredients. Both work for me.

gotta go in next week. Wife is picking up an upper arm monitor this evening and I have the number for an on call doc and 4 ER's within 10 miles... He'll get on me about my weight harder this time I'm sure and suggest a little tuffer than I cut way back on the beer...... Worse thing I'm guilty of is beer and salt.... I'll do whatever he says tho.....

Recent research suggests that salt is not a major factor in most people's blood pressure. It's stress and heredity.

With the right mix of meds you will be fine, and you will live longer.

The wrist monitor will read the same as the regular bp cuff IF you read the direction's (which men don't do). Both monitors will be at the same level as your heart. I have both & yes it will change almost every time you read it no matter which you use.

With that pressure while laying down for 30 minutes meds are coming soon. How's the headache?

(quoted from post at 09:49:33 01/27/12) How's the headache?

Haven't had it again yet but it's a wonder... The way I've been worrying about this BP.... Feel better about it now and ain't gonna worry about it til I get checked out next week.....

Forgot yesterday, more potassium and less salt. Otherwords change the balance of salt and potassium. Lot of meds do this by giving you potassium. Hard to do because secret ingredients in food. Specially processed. Good luck and good health. Dave

See here where Doctors consider 140/90 as being the upper limit. You are well in front.I think that wrist thing is doing more damage to your mind than your BP.

I'll take my digital home monitor to the manual Dr. office method any day. Awhile back, when I was deciding that I had to do something about my BP, I would take it several times a day having done different things during the day. The pressure varied wildly. Did this many days and same results.

So when I go into the Dr.'s office the first thing I get is weighed and the second is a BP test, manually. I told the nurse that I monitor my BP at home and it is all over the place. I just drove over here, could have traffic trauma, came in and could have some emotional issues if you give me some wrong answers, so how do you make heads or tails of what you read my BP to be?

She thought about it for a minute and said "Well, we pay attention to the average over your trips here". Yeah right. Waste of time if you ask me and I told the Dr. He didn't answer me. That was just after I told him what I thought of the AMA. He said that he didn't agree with everything the AMA did either. Good. Then I told him that I am a prudent researcher and user of alternate medicine. Does he have a problem with that.....he said NO!

We get along fine. He got most of my BP under control with the water pill alone and I went back and told him I wanted it lower and he added the generic Lisinop and got it the rest of the way. 2 trips, total success. Good old country doctor.

Guess I'm gonna have to kick off from sumpin else... Wife brought the upper arm monitor and have been normal. The wrist one still gives wild readings on me but works fine on the wife and matches the arm readings withinn a couple points...... Anyway, just checked and was 130/75.. Still going to the doc and changing eating habits as much as possible and try to take off some weight... Don't know why I was feeling so bad earlier unless I ate something that wasn't doing right or I was a little allergic to.... Looked at the bicycle today but couldn't get over how nice it looks hanging on the wall

Thanks for the tips tho....

I have and enjoy both and also low BP now. I went through the
no salt fiasco years ago and decided that food without salt is
PUKE. I don't go nuts with it, but I don't do without it either.

It's all about quality of life man. If you have to live like a veggie,
what's the point? Remember, the Dr. is the hired help. It's your
body and your life and you are in charge. Beware of the money
mongers....they are everywhere. When your Dr. or anyone else
tells you something, question where they are coming from. If
friendly, fine, if $$$$ beware.

Oh, I forgot something. When I went in for my first visit I told him (the Dr.) about my beer and my generic Sildenafil tablets (the little diamond shaped blue thing...shhhhh) and possible interactions with medications he was going to prescribe. He didn't even acknowldge the comment.....he said sooooooooo.

Life is good man. It's your life. Live it. BOOOOOO on the fear mongers.

The salt helps the body retain water. The first step in BP medications (I experienced the professional cautious approach to the subject) is to reduce the bodies water content. In the process there is more room within the confines of the skin for the blood vessels to relax and hence reduce the pressure on them which reduces the pressure on your pump....your heart. With my current cautious medical approach I get the best of both; salt and lower BP.

Potassium: Florida fresh squeezed OJ with Calcium and Vit.D (any OJ) , potatoes, bananas, melons.....to name a few.....yummie.

Add that to your outdoor grilled BEEF steak (with salt and pepper) and onions and garlic, with some Jalapeno peppers, a little Cab. Sav. grape juice, some candle light, a little mood music in the background...... a loving woman and man it just doesn't get any better than that. Old age???????? What on earth are you talking about.

The way to take weight off is to take small helpings and one
plate. Skip the fat desserts. Get some exercise.....take the dog
for a walk....I feel like a Yukon sled when I take mine for a
walk...he stands on his hind legs pulling on me.

If you have to have a snack between meals try Checks serial
snack; cereal, peanuts, a little seasoned salt, onion and garlic
powders, maybe a tad of Tabasco and butter with some
Worchestershire (recipes on www)......superb and not much fat
(peanuts primarily).

It's your life man. Live it and enjoy.

try a harness on your dog... Had rottweilers and even a couple of the aussies drive themselves nuts pulling on the collar, put on a harness and they calmed right down and stopped pulling.....

Think I may be getting an allergy to peanuts.... Had some (a bunch  ) peanut butter yesterday evening and felt bad right away.... Wife is borderline diabetic and has to eat healthy so takes pretty good care of me as far as eating... As long as I don't cheat..

On harnessing the dog, I started with a collar and he could
wiggle out of the best. He is a blond long haired Italian dog (saw
his picture on the wall at the vet with a lot of other critters) and
has a thick neck and smaller head.

I have him in a 40' square pen in the yard and take him out a
couple of times a week. He gets so excited getting to get out
and smell/you know on everything.

On your feeling better, stress is a killer. Worrying about your BP
is stress and can kill you. I didn't realize how my body was
reacting to the stresses of my job till I retired.

On your wife and your diets, my daddy contracted diabetes which
ran in the family and he was a sugar lover and over weight, no
exercise. Don't know which he had, type 1 or 2. Anyhew,
mother controlled it with his diet, no insulin, and smacked his
hand any time he tried to reach for a sugar item AND CHEAT!!!!!
NO CHEATING, Grin.
