Yale forklift

I have a Yale LP forklift with a 6 cy., flathead, Chrysler in it. The thing drives fine , but seem to have issues at times.
In short it will back up or pull up and then won't move. I have to throttle it up and sometimes turn the steering wheel back and forth to get it to move. It almost acts like a clutch, but there is no smell and once it warms up it travels right along. Anyone ever encounter such a problem? TY

Clutch facings gone?

Steel on steel don't smell the same as clutch facings burning.

When it starts to move, does it lurch or start off gradually?

We had a Hyster with a wet clutch, I don't think it smelled when it was being abused, might be the case here the oil stops it from getting hot enough to smell

If powershift, make sure all linkage on brake pedals is free, and the brake pedal pivots. Also check for lost motion in said linkage. Sounds like declutching valve is not quite returning all the way. Keep this stuff oiled up real good.

Sounds just like mine except mine drives well just doesn't stop very well. It sounds like you need to check the oil in the torque converter. Mine had a new one when I bought it 25 years ago.

You are the 2nd guy to say torque convertor and the way it behaves I am thinking that may be the problem. Next quetsion --how do you check the oil in teh convertor?

You probably would have to jack it up and get under it. I know that can be difficult, but one way is from the sides with a bar and blocks.
