Need a new haying tractor--What do you recommend?

I have been using a MF 1085 for the last few years and it is time to let it go and replace it with something newer. I mainly use it for running a disk mower and round baler putting up between 500 and 1,500 rolls per year with a JD 535 baler.

Been looking at a Kubota M 9540 or M 8540 with front wheel assist, loader, cab, etc. These are 95 and 85 hp tractors respectively. Would like to find a good used one with low hours, but none have shown up in my area yet.

I believe the baler recommendations are for an 80 hp tractor. I would also use the tractor for moving and loading hay and for other general loader work on my Ranch. I have sandy soil, so the 4 wheel assist would be a big plus in the soft ground.

Any thoughts on those models of Kubota? Good, bad, other. Is there a comparable model of JD or Case/IH that would be recommended?

The 9540 is just a 80 some hp tractor. Everybody is using Engine hp instead of PTO hp. I would lean towards a 6400 John Deere 85 pto hp. There seems to be 10 of them to 1 of everybody else. My neighbor has 2 of them, newer 6430's. He said there was up to 20,000 difference in them. His last one is IVT trans with a Active seat and suspension on the front axle. He thinks the cheaper one is a better deal.

Wouldn't touch a 6000 series deere personally. The quality control in the factory in germany where they are made is poor at best. Get a 7000 series or a kubota would be a good choice also. My inlaws have a 9540 and a M125x and really like both. Open station, mfwd and loader on the 9540 and cab, mfwd and loader on the M125x.

I don't know what JD 6000 you are talking about. I personally have had very little troubles with them. I have a JD 6400 with 12000 hours on it with nothing done other than change the oil and filters. I know of a neighbor that has a JD 6400 that just turned 20,000 hours. It only had the head redone and a new head gasket at 14,000 hours. Both of these are used everyday in all kinds of weather.

I own three 6000 series Deere's. (6430's) All used hard (Hwy right of way mowing) Ton of hours on all 3 with no problems. Not sure where you get your info, but it wasn't from any 6000 series owners I know of. Very high quality tractors from personal experience.

When I went looking I looked at all of the brands. Liked the Agco best.(RT95)All had good features but some had features I didn"t like. John Deere had to many plastic pieces in the cab, Kabota has a small cab,Case/New Holland hydraulics were questionable. When it came down to it the agco had the best transmission and a shuttle that shifted smoothly from forward to reverse which was important to me as I load a lot of hay. 6 years now and not one issue. Would I buy another? In a heartbeat but if new it will have to be a massey or challenger as they have droped the agco name.

T.C. I rarley wade in on this level but since I am up front and telling you have been selling KUBOTA 28 years I am bias. Have sold OVER 60 of the 40 series since they came out most people love the units for doing what you are doing. Perfect loader tractor , easy on fuel and GREAT WARRANTY and company.. Good luck

Case/IH Farmall 95 in the one. Little turbo'd intercooled 4 banger is real easy on fuel have seen 1.5 gals/hr spraying.

I would recommend a 6000 Deere. There are litterally hundreds of them working around my area. Mostly for hay tractors and some for smaller field work. They are very dependable tractors if you take care of them. I would say get a real 6000 like 00, 10, 20, 30 series. The 15 series are ok they are just plain jane tractors. We did have problems with the A/C in the top of the cab leaking sometimes. The drain lines for the condensor had o-rings that went bad prematurly sometimes. Other than that they are good tractors if you want something with less electronics.

Here's a used Kubota on the Dallas Craigslist that might work for you.
Kubota M9540 TRACTOR Cab (A/C-Heat) Loader w/ Bucket & Forks 4x4 - $38500 (22469 IH 20, Wills Point, TX 75169) pic phone # 214-502-3977

I see there are lots of recommendations for the JD 6400s, but the series they replaced 2950/2955 are are also good tractors. Same HP (~85 pto), but with a naturally aspirated 6-cyl instead of a turbo 4. There isn't much price difference between the two, so that might be saying something.

I use my 6400 and 4240 on the baler all the time. I'd use the 6400 all the time, but it's also my loader tractor. The 6400 is a bit easier on fuel, and the power quad makes it easy; the 4240 handles like a dream in a hayfield. Kind of a toss-up.

Our dealer shop loves 6000 series here. My buddy that works in there says as long as they are around they will all have work. Trans trouble, hyd leaks, ac leaks, and more. The 2950/55 are a crapshoot. Have had both the 2955 was a nightmare 3 hi/lo rebuilds, 2 clutches and a hyd pump after the hi/lo clutch polluted the line with clutch linings in 2 years/1500 hrs light haying and loader use. The 2950 was good until 6000 hrs since 2 hi/lo, 2 clutches, and lots of nitpicking small issues, in the 2000 hrs since it has been on light duty since we quit dairying. Love our 4440 23 yrs./7500 hrs of relatively trouble free service.

Put electronics at the top of your list. Either buy an older whatever, with no electronics, or a new one with all the goodies, but don't get a ten year old with electronics, they are very expensive to repair.
