O/T Disable power door locks

JD's post about plain pickups got me to thinking about the automatic power door locks on my Colorado. It's an 09 and I can't seem to find a way to program out the darned automatic locks. The book lists three options available for when they function but there's nothing mentioned about disabling them. I definitely DO NOT need to have the doors locked in my part of the boonies of NW Iowa and I feel I should have the freedom to decide if I want locked doors or not!

We had a 05, I think, Silverado as a service truck on the harvest that had power locks that I could program out. Has this program out option been discontinued? On this Colorado, there's a pause between the time I put it in park and the time when the doors unlock. Invariably I'm putting it in park and opening the door at the same time, only to goof up the locks. Then I'm fiddling with the buttons trying to find the one that will set me free. GRRRMPH! Jim

It's from the safety folks to keep a door from popping open in and accident that could see you ejected......I don't like em.

GM changed 2005 so you can't change the automatic lock feature yourself any longer. In 2006 and newer models the dealer can set it to manual only position but not on all year models. Even when it is changed it will default back if you remove the battery for service.

I have two newer GM vehicles that do this automatic lock deal. I had both turned off by the dealer. One keeps defaulting back. I removed the door panel and unplugged the power locks on the drivers door.

I like you hate being locked into a vehicle without any control. I was in a pickup that went through the ice up in MN twenty years ago. IF it had the auto locks we would have drown because the wiring shorted out as the truck submerged. The power windows had quit and we had to break the windows to get the pressure to let us open the doors. I refuse to ride in a vehicle that has the doors electrically locked. When I want out I want out!!!!

one of the things i HATE about GMs. It wouldn't be so bad if they were like the older vehicles and pulling on the inside door handle unlocked it and opened the door, but when they are locked the inside door handle does nothing. You have to unlock first then handle opens door. so if you crash and take out the battery hope it don't catch on fire....

Thats not the reason.Women was stopped at a red light,Bum came off the sidewalk tried to get in her truck.Doors are locked for that reason.Car jacking in Malls are common.Home invasions are happening in rural areas here.80 year old woman was stabbed 35 times, managed to call 911 but died on the way to the hospital.I carry a 38 special, to old for the hand to hand movie crap.

I do wear a belt, it's the one safety thing I do, so the chances of being ejected are less, but I suppose if the door opens even when I'm wearing a belt I could get an arm crushed it if flew out the door opening. The safety freaks have gone so far that they are now endangering us with their safety devices.

I did try out a bare bones 98 Colorado that did not have the automatic locks, or at least I don't remember it being there. Maybe the fuse was pulled??? Jim

you wouldn't have the convenience of electric locks anymore, but you could unplug the actutators on the doors and you would just have the same thing as a truck with no power locks

I bought a '11 GM last April, my first GM in 20 years. Locks close at about 5 mph (forward or reverse directions of travel) and stay closed till you either put it in park or push the unlock button on the drivers arm rest.

If you want to drive with no locks, just push the unlock button after you get over 5 and they lock.

I was thinking about disabling mine for the above mentioned reasons, but also per the above mentioned reasons, I decided that I can learn to live with them.

On this truck you cannot lock the door with the engine on or off and key in the ignition until you have tried to do it twice. First time it won't work and you get a warning chime...i.e. do you really want to lock the door with the key in the ign? Second time you punch the lock button, it locks.

If you get out of the truck, in park, and accidentally lock the drivers door on your way out via the conventional door locking button and come back and think oh no, I locked myself out, you didn't. The rest of the doors are still open.

HTH,

Mark

Well that's interesting cause the other day I locked myself out of the drivers door but the passenger door was still open. Jim

lady calls a repair shop, wants them come and find out what is wrong with the car, says the remote doesn't unlock the doors and she can't get home.....you figure out if she is blonde, lol...wounder if she knows what the key slot in the door is for,,lol

(quoted from post at 13:12:16 01/22/12) one of the things i HATE about GMs. It wouldn't be so bad if they were like the older vehicles and pulling on the inside door handle unlocked it and opened the door, but when they are locked the inside door handle does nothing. Every truck I have ever seen also had a door lock that was mechanically hooked up to the mechanism. You can either push the button or slide the actual door lock. Kind of like the blonde who locked herself into the car because the keys were on the outside.

Well sir how do you think I found out. My lady did just as you did and had a friend where she was parked bring her home to get the keys.. took them out of the ignition and put them in her purse but left the purse in the truck....she seldom drives the truck and is not that familiar with it.

I wanted to know how she did that and spent some time going through what she could have done to cause her problem...she didn't know about the Park position unlocking all the doors.

What I figured happened, and I demonstrated it to her after I figured it out, was that as she was getting out of the truck, she accidentally depressed the drivers door lock. Upon returning she thought she was locked out and took an alternate solution when all she would have had to do was to open the rear door and reach over and lift the drivers lever. I didn't say anything about it.......best you know to let some things be. Ha!

Mark.

Just an FYI, Ford has had a feature for a long time, at least since the 70s, where the door will unlock and open anytime you pull the inside door release handle. This is an entirely mechanical thing both on cars with and without power locks.

So while Fords do this auto lock thing too, you'd never notice because it always unlocks when you get out. :D
