I've been in the market for a 4x4 that will be my driver and will need to pull 4K a few times a year. I found a 04 F-150 extended cab with the FX4 package. 42,000 miles, 5.4, auto trans. If you have one I'd like to hear about it.

Find out which transmission it has in it. They used both the 4R70 (700 lb.ft.) and the 4R100 (1000 lb.ft.). My 05, 5.4 liter has the 4R70 and is a little weak for pulling. It has 90,000 miles on it now and needs new ball joints. It has had one injector replaced and two COP's replaced other than that is is a good truck. I also replaced all four pads and rotors at about 60,000 miles. Not real stingy on gas as it gets about 14 MPG in city and a little more on the highway.

I have a 1999 F150XLT with the 5.4 and I use it to pull a 31 ft camper about 6 times a year. It has 216000 miles on it and still goes good. I picked up a 2007 F150XLT a few months ago and will pass the old one down to my grandaughter

(quoted from post at 11:35:11 01/21/12) I've been in the market for a 4x4 that will be my driver and will need to pull 4K a few times a year. I found a 04 F-150 extended cab with the FX4 package. 42,000 miles, 5.4, auto trans. If you have one I'd like to hear about it.
i had one i bought new and was a good truck, traded it on a 2011 f150 with the 3.5 ecoboost engine. make sure the spark plugs are changed before you buy it as the original plugs are known to break when it is time to change them. the new plugs don't have that problem. chuck

Not 100% on this but I think most of the max tow optioned trucks with the 9.75" rear end and heavy payload package have the 4r100.

I looked at an 05' FX4 just last weekend as a possable replacement for my 97' F-150 w/ tow package. Pretty disappointed to find that the 05' was rotted out underneith nearly as bad as my 97'. Box was shot and the spring hangers were about to break. Had 156,000 miles on it so the 5.4 was quieter than mine, but the transmission wasn't as tight as mine w/ 228,000 miles on it. For $4,800 I just said thanks and walked away.

I spent the entire summer fixing salt damage on my 96 F150.Put 20 feet of 1/8 x5 steel on the chassis,Replaced the spring hangers and both fuel tanks.2 box cross menbers were rotted away so I made new ones.Chassis crossmember in front of the rear tank was rotted with sharp edges,fuel lines and power wires were laying on the sharp crossmember.Ford wont sell a new one, junk yard wanted 50 bucks for a used one.I built a new one with steel I had on hand.I drive the truck 4000 miles a year.Haul lumber to build picnic tables for sale,haul grain, hay and fertilizer.I pull a small boat trailer.The truck runs and looks good but I am looking for another truck.Next truck wont be a Ford.3/4 ton Chevy or GMC looks better to me. The Ford engine is famous for spitting spark plugs.In any case put any truck you are interested in up on a lift and look it over close.

I would not be so quick to jump on a GM. I'm driving a 2001 Chevy that is so rusted out that the brake lines failed. Thats why I was looking at that ford.

Ive had to replace all the brake lines and hoses on my Ford.That will happen to any truck or car.Our local mechanic showed me some brake tubing that wont rust and is very soft.There are plastic covered lines that stand up well.Had an 89 Mercury with coated lines.Ford trucks have lines between the chassis and gas tank that you cant see.Ford trucks are known for burning up because of a bad cruise control switch on the master cylinder.I disconnected mine when I bought the truck.The Ford chassis is pretty weak when new.You will find the bumper ready to fall off on many of them.My son has a 3/4 ton 06 GMC.He had brake lines replaced at 100,000 miles.Friend had a Ranger that blew a brake line at 60,000.Pay a mechanic to put any truck you are considering buying up on a lift for a close inspection.

Get it into Ford dealer and change the plus to the new style, BEFORE they are welded in there with carbon.

Ford switched to aluminum heads in 1997.Ive heard the heads had just 3 threads in the spark plugs holes.The difference in heating and cooling of aluminum and iron loosened the threads.My son had an Explorer that spit a plug.The Triton engine was used for 10 years.If is says Triton on the fender dont buy it or get rid of it.

I got on to a site called carcomplaints.com this morning.Lots of info on breaking spark plugs in Fords.I wont be buying a Ford to replace my 96 F150;
