What a coincidence........

Went yesterday evening and picked up my new back blade. It was disassembled and still in the crate... Crate is a 2'x6'x1' cage of 1 1/2" angle iron... looks like 1/8-3/16 thick.... One piece of the frame is just right to hold 3 55 gallon drums (6 if I stack 2).

1300 pounds. Think angle of that size would hold the weight if I anchored one side to the wall and supported the other at each corner and in the middle ? Longest unsupported span would be 3ft. Would fit nicely above my crimper and I'd just have to put valves (?) and a flex pipe on the bottoms to feed the crimper....

Also, since it's a lighter quality blade, would it be a good move to weld the other two 6ft lengths across the back side of the blade?

Thanks, Dave

(quoted from post at 05:00:30 01/21/12) just wonderin why you wanta haul around 6 55 gal
drums on your back blade.

Sorry, the drums would be for grain bins above my crimper from yesterday, thought I put that in there but didn't preview or read it after posting......
Want to build and support grain bins in the feed room (stall) in the barn. 3 drums would also satisfy my needs and not cost anything if the angle iron would be strong enough to support them.

A bu is 32 qts. 4 qts in a gal. That's under 7 bu
per barrel. That's about 350 lbs of ground feed more
or less. I would think that light angle iron would
hold up fine. the supports and the wall are going to
hold the weight. But no, I wouldn't mess with
welding the irons to the blade.

You didn't say where you bought the rear blade..

I re-welded about everything on mine (7' from TSC).

It is also "Light", I think..I put one chain from the center of the blade, just above the heavy cutting edge I put on, up forward to the front of the frame.
I drilled the Pivot stop-bolts out from about 1/2" (kept stretching them and breaking them), so I drilled them out to the same size as the Main center bolt..
Then, just to be sure (the JD 630 is weighted Heavy)..I put a chain from the ends of the blade (top), forward to just behind the 3-point pin..
I never angle the blade anyway..

My advice would be to spend the money on a much Heavier blade, in the 1st place..!!

bought it here from a german store... blade is 1/4" thich with another 1/4" x6" cutting edge that can be replaced. Will have a 3/4" x4" rubber edge sandwiched to ease off on the cobblestones. If I need an industrial strength blade, there is a community one available for the asking.

Put a heavier cutting edge on it, that could possibly compensate for those 2 pieces you are thinking about welding to the back. i don't think you will have any trouble with it going out of shape as long as it is used for it's intended purposes, eg wouldn't try and pull a tree stump out.2c

Cutting edge (6" wide) is 1/2" because of the replaceable edge..... Most I'll be doing is spreading some gravel and smoothing the ruts I made in one of the pastures. Main purpose is scraping poo and snow (if we get any)......
