I just purchased a 4400 diesel combine serial # 351884h for our 65 acres and I want to get familiar with how to operate it so I can show my son who is 12. We need to drive only 3 miles but want to be careful and not do any harm to the old machine. Any one have operating manuals or just some good helpful advice would be well appreciated. The owner unfortunately passed away 2 months ago had harvested around 95 acres with it this past fall, millow and beans.I also will be needing a corn head for it any advise on which model on that would also be of great help. The seller started it last week and it fired right up but has never driven a 4400 before. Thanks very much. Mike

This sound elementary, but be check the engine has oil and antifreeze. Also check the transmission and final drives for oil.

Make sure you have a long bar to unplug it, they have no reverser and at 50 years old I plug mine so it would be a safe bet that a twelve year old will.

Check ebay and if nothing else a JD dealer will be able to get you one. They are a fairly simple combine to run and drive.

Corn head- 443 (narrow) or 444 (wide) for 4 or 8 row planter, 343 or 344 for 6 row planter. 4400 was a nice machine, but you will probably have to slow down some in the newer hybrids. That machine was made when corn was just approaching the 100 bu yield barrier, so it doesn't have the capacity in the seperator for some of these hot new numbers. But they will still do the job.

Parts manual is on line for free at the JD web site. Operators and service manuals are reasonable at 1-800-522-7448. The are too many items to check or adjust on an unfamiliar machine without a check list.

Controls are color coded.
Red knobs control ground movement...throttle lever,(small short one by your left knee) gear shift (the one in the console) Variable speed (on the steering wheel post)

Yellow knobs control the seperator. Long lever at the front of the console, seperator engage/disengage. Switch on upper right of the dash panel, header shaft engage/disengage.

Black knobs. left hand lever on the steering wheel post does dual duty, with a cutter bar installed, reel lift, with corn head, variable speed feeder house. Far right lever on steering post, header raise/lower. The black knob below the throttle lever and on the side of the console is for concave adjustment.

Check to make sure the brakes work on many of these the cables are froze up lack of use and often the fluid resivour has leaked empty.Get a set of books, read them and go slow and you will get along good.Make sure everything works and is adjusted before turning it over to your son. It takes awhile to get the feel of a combine and every machine is different. We have two identical combines but the feel in each is different.

I used to own a 4400 and ran a 443 corn head on it. I would have to respectfully disagree with your assessment of their capacity, Don. In corn under 22% moisture I could consistently pick and clean 200 bushel corn wide open in second gear. That little machine loved corn and did a good job. If you get everything set like it should be 4 mph is very doable in corn. I've done thousands of acres with one. Mike

If you've got a decent John Deere dealer nearby, you could look into having them check over your machine and make some difficult repairs if it needs them and give you some good tips and insights into operating it. Having manuals and studying them is good too, but that isn't enough unless you have a lot of combine experience. During this "off time of year" they might do it reasonably. I gotta say that showing a 12 year old how to run the combine may be okay, but that's pretty young to be expected to operate it. Also, you'll find that no matter how much instruction you get...some experience is essential make you a really qualified combine operator, whether it's a 4400 or a 9870.
