Got a call from my daughter who lives in WA. She said they where having to leave that home to find a Motel because they have not had power for the last 3 plus hours. Said they had a lot of snow and ice. So if any of you know people in that area maybe you should check on them

Yeah we got alittle white stuff in Spokane,WA .But down south of here got alot more.Mountains got hit hard with the snow.I have not heard about much power being out thou.Hope alls well with you daughter Old.BlaineF(WA)

Yeah, we've got kind of a mess out here.

17 inches of snow here yesterday, about 10 in Seattle (north of us). Today, a warm rainy front coming from the southwest going north, hitting the cold air underneath, so we get freezing rain instead of snow, beginning this morning. About an 1/8 inch of ice on the branches here, and will be worse going north to Seattle, because its colder there.

But the worst is that we have mostly fir trees, and they had a full load of snow, which is now getting saturated and are icing up to boot. Result is that the tops are breaking out, and falling on powerlines, etc. I have 4 tops on my goat fence this AM- went out to cut them off, and another crashed down about 15 feet from me. Sounded like a rifle shot when it broke.

Decided maybe I didn't want to do that after all, and penned up the goats in the barn instead.

There will be lots of power outages- but we always seem to cope with it somehow.

Saw it on the news yesterday. I used to be a maintenance splicer for the phone company, and got sent on several trips for damage like that. Dangerous work because of downed lines and trees, and slick to even walk. Seemed like huge areas at the time, but these storms usually only covered a relatively narrow alley between rain and snow. And the damage they caused was unbelieveable. It's almost amazing how much damage can be done by an inch of frozen rain on surfaces. It also makes for some neat photos.

Mine went out at about 6AM and finally back on at about 11AM. Snoozin' under DOWN blanket. 10" at the foot of Mt Rainier, Paradise claimed over 4-ft of new snow. The Seattle TV newies are goin' NUTZ with excitement when I finally got my TV on. Turned the dog out and he's bouncing all over the place. Dunno how much longer the tarp over his kennel is gonna last. .......wearin' hipboots Dell and can't remember where the tire chains are so guess I stay home and eat my crockpot of Anasazi beans with hog-jowl flavoring yum-yum

Better check that tarp on the kennel- wife will have you living in it for a while until those beans pass---

3 hours and off to Hotel a little premature.
Couple times last year in the northeast it was over a week at a time

"This just in"- Seattle TV saying 195,000 people in that area are without power now- some may not be back on for several days.

My daughter in rural Maple Valley is right in the middle of it- but she's lodged in a hotel next to Sea-Tac airport, where she works. Alaska Airlines puts up a bunch of their folks at hotels during these situations, because they need people to man the counters. Haul them back and forth, bring food, etc. They prefer folks who don't mind working 12 to 16 hours a day- daughter is all for that- mucho overtime. Even though dealing with the public when you have a lot of flight cancellations is not a real picnic.

Big problem for the majority of the folks (like Old's daughter, probably) is no auxilliary heat. Folks in town just have no choice but to go somewhere else, especially if they have kids. This is rare enough around here that most people don't have any backup systems like you guys who expect it every winter.

Oh, and next, we have a very moist warm front on the way, so stay tuned for flooding.

Not when you have kids that are very young which she does have and no form of heat so you got to do what you got to do to keep the kids safe and warm. One is still in diapers

We lost power last night (Buckley, WA, about 20 mi east of Tacoma). Have generator to run furnace, but only 5 gallons of gas. Ain't nobody getting in or out of here until we clear the fallen trees from the road. And I ain't gonna go clear trees until they stop falling.

The other consideration is that the hotels/motels fill up fast- so those who are most heroic end up left "in the cold".

Sleeting here real good in Tacoma. Dang stuff is bouncing off the snow/ice layer. Pretty funny to watch. Main roads are ok but side roads are very slick. Drive home from work was fun this morning and tonight is going to be an even greater challenge. BTW, no power loss at my place, of course I live only 3 blocks from the Tacoma Utilities building.

My son just went out to get the mail and brought back a sheet ice from the hood of my pickup. It was 1/2" thick. I live just Northwest of Tacoma.
I tried to gety out and go to work but with ice on the bottom of the snow and the top, even with 4 wheel drive it is pretty dicey.

One of my step sons is a firefighter in Seattle. He was told to report to work before the storm rolled in and to figure on pulling double shifts for the duration of the storm.

He said they are expecting a massive amount of car accidents and also expecting more fires than normal if power goes out. People do stupid stuff to try to make heat in power outages.

He said he will call us once it is over, don't try to call him until then. DOUG

Just got back in the house a bit ago. Apricot tree fell on the deck from the weight of the snow and ice this afternoon. A couple branchs on my Agricat parked next to it and a fair size limb on my golf cart. Barbeque grill, smoker and a couple chairs on the deck will never be the same. Wife and I were both nearby, heard it go and watched it fall. Her inside the house and me by the garage. Had to have her throw me my keys so I could get a chainsaw out of the shop and cut my way back into the house! Wonder how apricot wood will do in my new smoker... Gotta make the best of things as it sure could have been worse.
Power is still on. It was flickering for a while which is why I was outside getting lanterns from our trailer. Trees cracking all around here for quite a while this afternoon as I was working around the tree trying to see and salvage.Really an eerie sound to have trees breaking off around you!
