Diesel fuels

Just got back from a road trip with my diesel truck. I noticed at the different stations where I filled, that sometimes the fuel is a greenish color and gets foamy when you fill. And sometimes it is almost a clear color and not hardly foamy at all. What is the difference if any? I don't know if the mileage was better or worse on either one. I was getting good mileage on the last tank that was the clear stuff until I hit that cold front with the strong head winds that came through and it really went down. My son was also driving with his and the computer mileage was showing 21 till he hit the wind and it went to 15.

All diesel fuels are different. They adhere to an ASTM spec for boiling range and a couple of other physical and chemical specs. The composition varies according to the crude that it is cut from. We buy spot market stuff. They claim to control it, but I have seen a wide range variations from batch to batch, so performance can be different.

Could have gotten some biodiesel. It seems to be clearer and regular road diesel. Mileage should be the same.

Was this a multi-state trip?

Was the green diesel in certain states?

It might be that certain states still require diesel to be dyed green.

The diesel we used to get for the tractors was dyed green back in the 1980's. Agway even put this "GREEN Diesel Fuel" sticker on the tank for some reason.
