Rolled oats

I was at the feed mill in December and I asked for my order, 6 bags 10%sf 2 scratch 3 cc and 5 rolled oats... Ect. Guy told me they dident have any oats, which has happened before, meaning they don't have any in feed bag. So I asked when they would have some, and the guy said not until next year we r out for good. He told last year 2010 they got 200 tons in,this year 2011 we got 60 tons in? I guess it was a bad growing season for oats around here. Anyone else have a shortage of oats?

Simple solution. Get the price up to compete with corn and beans and myself and many others will start raising all the oats you need.

My crop is the poorest in years. Debated even planting them- almost a month later than 2010. (One extreme to the other) Not very good yield, not very good weight, not very good color.
Where exactly are you?(Modern view tells you where I am)

Haven't sold mine yet, such as they are. Normally go to the same mill. I hear all kinds of prices. I don't know what we'll end up with. My guy will just quit using them at some price level.

A lot of our oats here in the US come from Canada now. And northern South Dakota and North Dakota. They get yields and weights that we Iowan's can only dream of. I know some of that area of the country had exremely wet weather last spring and summer and that might be part of the reason for a shortage. Jim

what does oats cost you folks?? I've got about 800 pounds of oats I'd give you.... You feed the oats to horses? We usually feed barley if we give grain at all... Do you have beetpulp? What does it cost? Pretty lucky in this area, can buy straight from the farmer or we have 4 feeds dealers within 10 miles.....

Last summer rolled and molasses coated oats were $7.50
@50 pounds, cracked corn was $8.50 per 50 pounds. Yes I
feed the oats mixed with sweet feed to the horses. I have
used beet pulp but not very much.

I found a crimper for a real good price and buy whole grain/corn in 50kg (110#) for 4-6 euro ($5,50-8,00) depending on timing and whether I buy direct from the farmer..... Like feeding the beetpulp but it's a PITA (but cheap).....

Dave, here in northwest Ohio and northeast In. they all for work horses get oats direct from bin and no barley raised anyplace.

Guess I'm spoiled.... Never had to buy feed in the States except going to the feedmill with the neighbor..... If I am prepared with storage, I can get anything I want (wheat, oats, & barley) right out of the combine within a half mile of the house. Shelled corn has to be picked up in the next town.... Got my crimper for a hundred bucks. Just need to do a little remodelling in the barn( feed room) to make it a little more user friendly...

Same here. Last oats I had were 4 or 5 years ago. Sat in the wagon almost a year. Was fially able to get 1.00 a bu. No more oats for me.

Right here in central NY I was at the feed mill a couple of days ago and the owner said they were out and didn't know when they would have any.

We need to start more threshing bees or plant more oats at the show grounds. It seems around here in SD, MN, IA area, almost every antique tractor show threshes oats and sometimes wheat.

That's neat glad to know u, saturdays seem pretty quite at mt loretto., almost thought it was closed down! But there were a couple cars there.
