OT — Bare root seedlings getting cut down.

I planted about 100 advanced generation loblolly seedlings around my place the other day. I noticed that a few of them have been cut about 2" above the ground and the little tree is laying there next to the stump. Not eaten, just cut.

Anyone have an idea of what is doing that? Cottontails?

(quoted from post at 12:19:15 01/19/12) Thanks fellas. If anyone knows any good rabbit recipes, I'm all ears.
Speaking of rabbits, I had rabbit in an upscale restaurant a couple of weeks ago and when I was at the market this week decided to look at getting some. All they had was frozen, which was ok, except the Label said "Product of China". WTF? I started thinking of the trip that little rabbit went on.

Rabbits 45 degree cut, deer 90 degree. Deer will eat spruce if they are hungry enough.

The bigger the seedling the less problem you will have. i.e. switching to transplants. But if the snow gets deep the mice will take all the bark off the base and you will still lose the tree.

I have 2 mountain fiest terriers to keep the mice and rabbits under control. One of the best investments to date.

Chicken wire fence or a large diameter tile will keep rabbits away from small plants until the snow gets within 6 inches of the top of the fence. Cottontails seem to chew on any wood 1/4 inch diameter and smaller including roses.

Tar tree wrap will stop voles from chewing the bark off small trunks under the snow.
