John Deere D Gaskets and Felts

Guys I'm in need of a few gaskets, felt and vellumoid washers and I don't know where to get them. I need a PTO cover gasket (D1740R) which is not available from JD, Air cleaner gasket (D2377R) not available from JD, Shifter oil drip felt washer (D2098R) and Vellumoid Washers (D933R) and according to the parts manual I need 10 per rear axle quill bolt. There are eight axle quill bolts and these washers are 8.54 each from JD. When I removed all eight of the axle quill bolts only three still had any washers left. My question is are these really needed because I won't be pulling the 8 axle quill bolts on the left side of the tractor.

You'd be surprised just how much you can still get from your John Deere dealer. I see YT has gasket sets for D's listed in parts. Also, get a copy of Green Magazine, it is full of parts suppliers.
Try someone like Fastenal for the washers, and gaskets are easy to make, unless they're head gaskets. Just need a roll of gasket material and a hammer.

I've restored or helped restore a few John Deere D's and used short pieces of high quality oil and fuel resistant hose in place of those vellumoid washers. I can't remember the actual length of each piece but I allowed for 3/16" of squash and when I cut them I trued each cut to a smooth finish to help make the seal.

Almost ten years after doing one tractor, the owner asked me to help him install a set of 35 tooth sprockets in place of the 41's. So while I was in the differential, I checked one of the hose pieces and found it to be as sound as the day we first installed it. Sure a lot cheaper than what JD wanted. Of course a die hard purist may take exception to that approach.

I made the aircleaner gasket, I'd probably make the PTO gasket too.

As for the shifter lever washer....I replaced it with a modern lip seal...

The washer and spring press against the "box" in the top transmission cover, holding the seal in place even when you move the shifter. Hasn't leaked a drop since I put it together.

Grabatire,

Thanks for the recommendation on the oil resistant hose in replace of the vellumoid washers. That's exactly what I'll be doing.
