I was thinking of ripping with a field cultivator(chisel plow),then 'finishing' with a roller harrow.I have a JD#70 planter w/double disk openers.I know I will have to spray atleast twice.Roundup for the grass,etc.,2,4,D / Banvel for the "Roundup Ready" alfalfa. Can I spread dry,or do I need to go 'injected liquid',say a "2x2" program. This is furrow irrigation country-we plow and work our ground "to death" to get a clean trash free seedbed."notill and center pivots are Very rrare here.I welcome any comments. Thanks,Steve

You could rip it out and then finish it. You would have been better to have fall ripped it rather than trying to do it in the spring. I have had trouble getting the root clumps to work down.

Does anyone around you have a more modern planter setup to no-till??? If you could hire it done you might be money ahead with fuel cost what they are.

Plus that JD 70 planter does not have the best depth control in real loose ground with clumps.

I would try to keep away from Banvel on corn. You have to hit the growth window early or you can easily cause stalk damage. This is tricky here but where you are on irrigation you may not have that issue.

I'm in no-til country, and we use a no-til coulter ahead of the planter openers on the main frame of the planter. It does any ripping necessary. We burn down the trash with gramoxone and use Bicep or an equivalent to control the weeds for the summer. 2-4D can be used to 'sweeten' the gramoxone action, as can Banvel pre-emerge. Most of the fertilizer is spun on, and a liqoud nitrogen carrier is used for the rest of the 'N' and to carry the gramoxone and Bicep. We may also do a postemerge to control any outbreaks of other weeds, so we use RR corn to be able to control pests like Johnsongrass and Canada thistle.

Maybe of interest.

The stubble seems to be an important factor.

By the way, being in alfalfa, we'd just palnt into the stubble because the alfalfa will supply some of our N needs. The field should already be smooth enough, and the no-til coulters will work up enough bed for planting. So ripping may not be necessary.
