What it's all about is that there is a HUGE problem with certain unscrupulous folks making copies of trade marked and copy-rited books, repair manuals, videos and music, and selling those illegal, pirated copys on the internet. This means that the person who actually wrote the music, and the person who actually made the recording, as well as the recording companies and book publishers are loosing large sums of money because their products are being stolen right out from under their noses.

The legislation being proposed would give the government the ability to turn out the lights and immediately shut down ANY website that has illegal, pirated copies for sale on that website. ANY website.

The problem with that though is that it gives total control of the internet to the government, and we ALL know how THAT is going to work out, so yes, you do need to contact your senators and congress people and ask them to defeat that bill. There are OTHER ways of policing the rip-off artists, and a few of those methods are already being implemented.

One opinion about what they should be doing matches mine- The less done, the better. "Nothing is safe while Congress is in session."

actually, its even worse then that. Any company feeling their copywrite/ip MIGHT have been infringed in anyway would be able to require the gov't to block that IP. IE, John deere wanted too, they could require the gov't to black list this website because somebody posted a 1920's JD brochure on here. Someone posts a vid with a bit of music in it, the RIAA gets to shut you down.

No judges, no lawyers, no lawsuits, no recourse. just any company shutting down any site because it might contain their ip. While very small individual websites would probably not be affected too much, its pretty much the death of any major site that has user generated content; ie forums, message boards, picture hosting sites, youtube etc.

This is probably the most dangerous bill submitted in a long time because it has some VERY powerful supporters and this is the very definition of the law of unintended consequences. in regards to freedom of speech and the Internet, the ease that a website can simply be made go poof is terrifying in the digital age.

Thank you. You were able to expand upon and clarify what I was trying to say.

As has become typical of the govt the last few decades, it makes ther honest person responsible for what others are doing and punishes the honest person.

I have proof of someone doing something like that already..
Cub Cadet™ ( to make this legal) someone posted information that all it contained was pictures and the time era they were built. so the police are out there. I saw nothing to suggest that it was an infringement of copy written material only Pictures of the tractors and years those models were made so they banned it in this Country.???

Does this mean info and any diagrams we post here are jeopardizing the future of this site ????

I am not really up to speed on the whole issue but from reading a couple of blogs I got the impression that copyright infringement IS a problem. But from what I read this measure is an attempt to infringe upon the rights of the many for the sake of a few.
The few in this case are big Hollywood types and the big recording studios, etc that are pushing for this.
Now I know there are a lot of people who don't like big corporations in this country but I'm not one of those. I think most big companies supply a product that many of us want and are willing to pay for. Not real interested in discussing that aspect of things here - just stating a personal opinion.
But I do not look real favorably at big Hollywood for several reasons and while I'm sympathetic to them being ripped off I'm Not so sympathetic that I want to see them trample upon the rights of the little guy to insure their annual profits.
I will email my two senators and my congressman this evening and tell them I think this is bad legislation. I hope that others here do the same.
