Tire Chain Tensioner

I had a bunch of springs I had liberated from someones trashed trampoline. Knew I would find a use for them. I picked up some chain from Tractor Supply and made this inboard tire tensioner. I would have put it on the outside but the length of the springs would have put the chain over the wheel weights. I like the clean look but definitely need to add a little tension. My tires are 14.9x28s and I bought two sections of 8'. It was way too much. Six and a half feet would have been about right.

I just use 2 bungie cords on each side - Works for me. I want them a little loose so they will clear themselves.

Hope they don't get caught up in something and rip the fenders off on you...
Honestly... on that type of chain all I do is put one rubber bungee cord on the side chain on the outside where the last/loose/half pair cross chain is hooked to the side chain. On a properly installed ladder chain I use absolutely nothing...

In the mountains I have found it better not to use any. If the chains are to tight, and the tire slips the chain stays down in the lugs.

It looks very neat, good for you. I also like to run my chains loose, not so loose that they can walk off but loose enough that the chain on the front of the tire falls down as I drive. It seems like either way could work, though, I don't know.

Great idea with the springs. A word of advice. If the chain breaks for some reason, having the springs on the inside will cause the tire chains to wrap around the axle. Put your tension on the outside of the tire to prevent this from happening.
