Reference the " Should I or Shouldn't I" post from yesterday I genuinely appreciate all your thoughts and encouragement. For some of you that answered I think I should have given a bit more info. I kinda got the feeling that a few thought I might be interested in some sort of profit and this would strictly be for pleasure. A couple of others might have felt I am alot younger than I really am (60 this year) so most likely will not be terribly interested in mowing lawns.
At any rate, again my sincere gratitude to you all. You are all a blessing to me in these matters. Bruce

I hope I didn't discourage you from a Deere entirely if that's what you want. Something with a 2 cylinder upright, like an M or MT might be a little easier for a novice than the A,B,G etc.

I agree that those would be better but might be too tall for the garage door and the pop-pop sound we like could upset the neighbors.

rrlund, absolutely no problem and I appreciate all opinions and concerns. Did you find it interesting all the different ways all the minds worked on my question? That's what is so valuable to everyone on this site. how complicated are the smaller Allis Chalmers to work on or get parts for or what about the JD 430 model? As far as my neighbors, I'm a pretty good citizen and would not go making a bunch of noise except at reasonable hours.

Don't know about the 430,but I got an Allis Chalmers C when I was 9. One of the simplest tractors you'll find to work on. About as straight forward as you can get. A lot of parts for those can be had right from an auto parts store.
As far as the variety of recomendations you received, guess folks tend to recomend what they know and like.

Depends on the 40-420-430 model and the door size in your garage, row crop may be too high and too wide to fit thru your door. would have to measure, with the power adjust wheel you do not have an axle sticking out past the tire, other type there is an axle sticking out, total length I cannot tell you. Now if you want to take it out for a drive on your residential street you likely have a 25 mph speed limit, those Fords would run at about 2/3 of the speed limit while the Deere would run only perhaps 1/2 of the speed limit so decide if close to keeping up with the speed limit for the cars is a consern or not. Like the B-C Allis they would have a top speed of close to 1/3 of your street limit and the muffler may or may not clear your garage door. The Deeres in a utility version should clear the top of the door. Still talking big bucks for any of them.
