Chickens????

OK I posted earlyer today about baching it. Becasue of that I'm taking care of the wifes chickens (layers). With 19 birds I'm getting anywhere from 11-17 eggs a day. I was under the impression that they only layed once every 2-3 days. Is this normal? Am I maybe over feeding em (keeping food and wather out for em 24-7)? The problem is I've given away 5 1/2 dozen eggs this week and still have 4 dozen in the fridge.

Thanks for any thoughts or advice.

Rick

Each bird will lay one egg per day to two days so it sounds like your count is about right.
I don't leave food out 24/7, but many do. Yes, you do need to keep water out all the time.
And quit giving them away, sell them and give the wife the money when she gets back home!

LOL yea she was supposed to start selling em...but give her the money???? heck she takes most of mine anyways....LOL

It's 11:40 here now. Just went and checked thier food and topped of the water. Sense 8:30 I've collected 13 eggs today so far.

You are doing well to get that many eggs this time of year. They must be young pullets. Ours are all 2 years and older. Two finally started laying. To be sure to get eggs in the winter it is best to get new hens every year. My grandfather always said to get chicks that will start laying about Thanksgiving time and they will lay all winter. This is the first year we did not get any replacements (too many) and we had to buy a couple of dozen eggs last month.
I know it is best to eat old hens that don't lay but we have not been able to bring ourselves to do that yet.

Pickle them! That way you can get $12.00 a dozen easy. Most taverns will buy them from you.
I like a good pickled egg with a barley pop.

Tank, we got a guy at the coffee shop has some layers. He's been providing most of us eggs for several years, and we've been giving him $1.50. Cheaper for us, and he gets some money. They're about $2.50 in the store.

Or you can just drive through town and pitch them out the window at passing cars---

Younger birds lay more eggs. I have chickens and have for years. Mine are not doing as well as yours are but then mine are around 2 plus years old. I keep feed in there houses 24/7 and water in the one. I have around 15 hens and get 3-7 eggs a day and sell my extra ones for $1.50 a dozen to help off set the cost of feed.

I have 8300 laying hens and run about 85 to 90% lay year 'round. I got lights on 'em 16 hours a day and the feeders run every two hours for 9 minutes, 8 times a day. Most of the hens have laid their egg for the day by 11 am. Mine are Organic and I get nearly $2 a dozen from my Co-op. They then sort 'em wash 'em pack 'em, and sell 'em in the stores for $3.40

You're doing well.

The humungous laying facility by me is rumored to be getting just a twitch over an egg a day per hen by playing with the lights. Jim

80% popped into my head from somewhere, and it looks like that's right where you are. Then I see farmerboy is getting 85-90%. I'd say that's exceptional.
Layers were some of the best critters we ever had around here. I think the wifes favorites were Red Star. It didn't take many times of me going out into their yard with a shovel, turning over some dirt, and getting worms/bugs, and they were downright vicious! You didn't make the mistake of turning over a sod with your hand more than once!

I had the 13 eggs mentioned by 11:40, just checked thier food an water at 4:30 and had another egg and if they stay true to form I will get anywhere from 1-4 between now and about 9 when I go out and check again and kill the lights.

Thanks for the info guys.

We had chickens for a while, feed got so high I started cutting the feed with sawdust, eggs got to having knot holes in them and people stopped buying them, got rid of chickens!!
