I was wondering ... if I would get some soybeans and crack them .. will that help the production of eggs ?? or will it just make them fat ?? or is there something else I can do ??

Right now they get Layer feed and Crack Corn mix with Oats ..

Just asking ... so THANK YOU for any ADVICE you give ....

I have fed mine Soybeans, but you have to cook them first. There is an enzyme in them that is hard on non-ruminants unless heated above a certain level.

Mine didn't care for them, they would rather have corn, so I discontinued it.

Our chickens go in spurts on their egg laying. It would help though to have more info. How old are the chickens? are they starting to molt? Is this the first time their production dropped off? Have a good talk with them and tell them to start laying or its in the stew pot. It hasn"t really helped me but it felt good.

My grandma raised about 200 Road Island Reds on the farm when I was a kid in central Ohio. In the winter time she would mix the laying mash with warm water and make a paste with it along with cracked corn and oats. Also gave them chicken grits for them to make the egg shells. Chicken grit is coarsley ground oyster shells. She sold eggs at the back door and also took them to town and traded them for things she needed. Miss those days. R W

Soybeans are about 40% Protein most chicken feed is about 18% Gamebird feed is about 28%. When we had show birds, the got the 28% to make better feathers. Feathers are protein. They don't need anywhere near that amount of protein, feed the soybeans to the cows. If you are feeding cracked corn it makes them fat and the egg laying will slow down. They need just enough corn to provide body heat in the cold winters. Ours get a little corn in the winter, and almost none in the summer, just what is in the mash. They need 14 hours of lite to keep them laying and make sure they have water to drink. Oyster shells for strong eggshells and grit free choice for better digestion.
