OT - unclaimed funds

This is not a scam. Got a letter from two companies saying I had unclaimed refunds and they would help me claim it. I know its not a scam. They said its public records. Of course, they will charge a fee for their "assistance"

I can claim the funds myself if I can locate them. Anyone know how to do this?

Varies from state to state, but most will have a state department that publishes from time to time. Google "Texas unclaimed funds", and I'll bet you find a website.

Went to the state comptrollers's site and they have an unclaimed property (includes funds)page. Did a search, but only found $11.20. Letters both claim there's over $1,000.

Both letters say its a refund of some kind.

I know here in Michigan there"s a list on the internet. They publish it in the paper once a year as well. I knew my name had been on the list in the paper for several years but never did anything about it. I looked it up online about two years ago. Seems like there was a form that I had to print out. I know I had to take it to the bank and have it notorized. It told on the site who it was that the money was from, but it didn"t tell how much,so I didn"t know if it was even worth the bother. The money was from an insurance company that we had had our health insurance through for a few years. I sent it in for the heck of it. Got over $300 back,so yes,it"s for real.
If I was you,I"d just do a Google search for something like "Texas unclaimed refunds" or some such thing.

I found my wifes name on the state list. Contact them and they will send you the paper work. To claim the money. Took me about a month.

Nancy,
Could it possibly be from another state other than our great State of Texas?
I found some under my name and my deceased mothers name on the site below as it covered more than just one state. Might want to give it a try, hope "ya find it. Sure don"t want to waste any cash on the email and then find out it"s not really a grand, but the small amount you found!
Good luck!

About 10 years ago we found my Grandmother's name on the Mich list. She was born in 01, came here, USA shortly after and died in 93 and has a very unusual name so its good bet its her. There was a big deal on our local news about all this unclaimed money. My aunt went through the process showing all her addresses back to 1912... they said it wasn't good enough proof!!

My dad passed away several years ago.He had 150 bucks in an unclaimed fund, but i was told i needed a lawyer to collect it.The lawyer would cost more than that.

Contact your state treasurer,no fee needed.Just supply proper ID.List is published in the newspaper twice a year in Maine.

Thats bait to get you to send the fee.If a bank has an account that has no activity for a long period they have to send the funds to the state treasurer.

Missingmoney.com, just make sure you go to missing money and not one of the pay sites

here in denver, colo. they print a list every year, on web and local paper, to let people know if there is money in limbo [for better word], don't state amount, don't send letters, but all states do it their own way...

If it is unclaimed money from the US Govt.

"Unclaimed money" in the search engine brings up a lot of possibilities.

I know you have some roots in Gosport I think, if the money in question is in Indiana, the attorney general has a web site that lists all the unclaimed money and other things of value. Start with IN.gov and you should find it easily. I bet other states have similar sites.

Hope you get rich.

In Nebraska all unclaimed funds are the domain of the state treasurer. We have a website that can be checked.

My grandmother's name is on the website. She died in 1982. Dad was the executor of the estate; he checked into it. The unclaimed funds are only $23 or so, and with all the hoops he would have to jump through it just isn't worth it.

Nancy, you said it was not a scam. Maybe not, but awfully close. Those kind of places have been known to, shall we say, stretch the truth, just a little. Their purpose is to make money, actually helping someone is secondary. Good Luck.

Nancy,

I don't use Google for many reasons, one being too many things show up when trying to search for something. My favorite search engine that cuts it down to about four pages is Dogile.com, and I went there asking "unclaimed funds texas residents", because I know that you are from the great state of Texas, and you might want to start there. Many states do offer such things, and clearly Texas does. Try it..."unclaimed funds texas residents", and see what Texas state government department hits you get if trying reclaim funds. Give it a shot and contact them, and I wish you the best of luck.

It's not a scam, but they want a percentage for
helping you find whats already yours...and you
can do it yourself, if you know where to look,
and how to file!

We were getting phone calls about every month saying we had unclaimed assets in New Mexico and to contact the company to find out more. I always ignored them, but I finally googled the company and found out they were legit, but not necessarily good...anyway last winter I had some time on my hands and started sorting through my old financial statements and realized I did not have any account statements from one of my retirement funds since we had left Clovis NM in 1998. I quickly called the company and after determining who I was they said that Clovis was our last address on file. Account was now over $1700...sorta wish all our other funds had gotten lost....

Hi, I'm in that business. Your money is probably at the county level. The state may have some but the counties have a pile too. No, it's not a scam but you have to be careful people don't take advantage of you. By that I mean this: anything over 25% fee is gouging unless there will be attorney's fees involved. Sometime it is necessary to hire an attorney. Counties are starting to use what is called an "interpleader" action meaning the distribution of the funds is left up to a judge. You can probably find the funds by contacting every county you've lived in and asking the tax assessor, tax commissioner or clerk of courts for your money. These are the people that hold the money at the county level before it goes to the state. If you lost a house to foreclosure from either a tax lien or mortgage forclosure, your money is probably being held by the county waiting for you to claim it. Make sure you tell them it was a atx or mortgage foreclosure or they will check their unclaimed funds list and it is different. You have to speak their language. Make the call to the county and claim it yourself or search google for "unclaimed state money" and check the state website for unclaimed money. I'm in Texas and Texas has over 3 Billion in unclaimed money. My guess though is your money is at the county level. Good luck
