4320 john deere pto slipping and power steering quitting

Hi, I have a 4320 John Deere. The pto quits working as well as the power steering when I hold the clutch in for approx. 20 seconds. When I let the clutch out everything is back to normal in 1 to 2 seconds. The next thing is when I turn the steering wheel back and forth and raise the three point, the three point chatters and vibrates as it slowy comes up. The last thing is the pto slips under load. The pto is brand new so it can't be the clutch or pressure plates. I have changed hydraulic oil and filters, and have checked the cyndrilical screen for the hydraulics also. It sounds like the hydraulic front up front is chattering a little, but it always has. The problem is getting worse and worse. Has anyone else had a problem like this and found a solution? thanks

Your charge pump doesn't turn with the clutch pushed in. Our 4040 (same only newer) has about 2 qt of oil directly on top of thepump. Our 4010 doesn't it will do this if you hold the clutch down to long and use Hyd. But. I think seals leaking on pto .It shouldn't leak off. Vic

No loader or any other use of hydraulics. We hold or slip the clutch when backing hayracks in or when dumping silage into our silage bagger. Thanks for the input!!

Sounds like you have a high pressure leak, when your tractor acts up feel the scv's, brake valve, and the pto valve(remove side panel by clutch pedal)should be warm/hot but not enough to burn your hand, remove the rear plug for the three point(behind the right side scv) and look inside for spraying oil/or heavy flow of oil running down the inside of case, I'm betting on the pto valve you might get by adjusting the linkage on the pto valve(make sure the spool is bottoming in the valve. Also while pto is engaged remove clutch cover under the tractor and watch the pto operating pistons they should not move while pto is engaged. chris

I suggest checking pto hyd pressure & trans pump flow. As Kent stated it could be a worn out trans pump or possibly stuck open hyd filter relief valve.

When clutch is depressed for longer than normal periods you will lose hydraulics until clutch is engaged.Dont know on PTO if its new and properly adjusted but suspect pressure or rubber o-rings which requires split to fix .The side counsel tractor pto were not manually engaged but hydraulically thats why some of them engage almost to fast sometimes resulting in sheared pins on augers and implements. The chatter upfront is usually the coupler which has plastic inserts or possibly worn splines which is easy to replace with proper tools.

Sounds like you have a high pressure to sump leak in the hydraulics. When the clutch is disengaged the trans pump stops. Under normal conditions the front reservoir and cooler hold enough oil to keep the main pump supplied. A high pressure leak will empty the reservoir and starve the main pump. Leak can be in any high pressure function (SCV, rockshaft, steering, brakes, diff lock, PTO). A simple check is to start the tractor when cold and let run for 15-30 minutes then feel for heat buildup in one of the functions. The warm function will be leaking internally. Good idea to put gauges on and test pto and main pump inlet pressures.
