aging friends.....

Just got a dose of reality today and wondering what I have to look forward to......
Been here 22 years and have a retired sergeant Major that had been retired a year or so before I got here.... Real good guy and I always allowed extra time when I needed to go where he worked.. FF and he's I guess pushin 70 and still sharp & very active... Last 8 or 9 years, I'd just see him in passing and maybe talk to him on the street a few minutes or run into him at the credit union..... Anyway, he went to the states on vacation a few weeks ago & I told him he could send packages to my address and pick them up when he got back.... He sent one and I got it yesterday. Called him and told him I had 2nd shift today and he could show up after 1700 to pick it up (offices are empty then)....

He shows up at 1530 and starts talking all this doomsday stuff and about militias and needing to get that ____ out of office yadda yadda.... Couldn't get him to shut up or change the subject and he started yacking at other folks in the office.... Finally got rid of him and the boss called me in and wanted to know my relationship with him and suggested I cut all ties if I wanted to stick around (in my job)..... I've seen nuts, but never anyone that I liked and respected so much and someone that still looks and acts sharp...... Is that what alzheimers does to people (don't know if he has it)????

Yes, early stages, but you found an old bullet polisher.

Was told once "no good deed goes unpunished."

No expert here, but I think Alzheimers victims are not typically verbose, especially about recent events. I always think of them as rather morose and sullen and physically combatant at times. Sounds almost more like
a manic episode (the up side of bi-polar). I used to work in a Psych facility, and this is how people in a manic phase would behave. Like an
overdose of speed with anti-social behavior thrown into the mix.

Hope he recovers or gets treated for whatever it is. Sounds like a nice guy underneath.

I'll never turn my back on him or any friend, but really have to watch and control where I see him.... Really sucks....

Don't think so but depending on where he is from and who he talked to and how long it's been sense he returned to the States it could be a huge shock to him and he may just be repeating what he saw/heard.

Well he IS from West Virginia.... Something that hit me a little is he always talked about his family visiting & how well they were doing... Today he said he spent about a day with them and couldn't stand the abundant b@stards and went to Ft Bragg to see his buddy the rest of the 3 weeks..... and on and on......

(quoted from post at 12:39:02 01/06/12) First three things I would do Is explain on the outside even if it means extra effort on your side about how close you came to loosing your job. # 2 explain you cannot do any such favors and won't for him giving the reason # 3 get this post deleted in case they look at your work computer ASAP .

I'm not in any danger now..... Just a shame to see him go downhill.......

He doesn't sound so "out there" to me- many in this country (including, I suppose, most E-9s) are very passionate about their belief that the President is putting the country on a road to ruin. Regardless of your political beliefs, I would suggest that him having this belief, plus the ordinary "I'm old and can pretty much say what I want" syndrom, would explain it.

Of course, you have to respect the boss's wishes, but I'm not so sure the guy is off balance, from what you posted.

I haven't seen such division in the USA since the Vietnam war----you remember the war that was supposed to stop China from taking over everything. Kinda wierd where all the cargo containers come from now. We've got the best govt. that money can buy. Just look at Ft. Hood---not even a trial for the alleged, ha ha shooter. Attorny General likely can't be fired cause he's got too much dirt on insiders. And the beat goes on.

Can't really tell if he is failing or not from what you said and I am not sure you would be in a position to know.

I think I would just tell him that he is a friend, but needs to be careful about what he says in public. Anger and frustration with the current situation is rampart. However, militia talk and so on can get someone on lists of possible terrorists and invite all kinds of scrutiny that nobody wants. Explain this to him in a nice way and politely suggest that such opinions should be reserved for private discussions. It is not unusual for retired people to lose their sense of when and where it is appropriate to discuss things.

I have a friend that is very similar, late 60's, been retired for years. Angry all the time, talks politics incessantly. I think my friend has nothing else to do, watches the tube and is on the net all the time. I suspect if you listen to Rush every day, watch Hannity in the evening, eventually your blood pressure meds will have to be increased.....lol!!! I predict that this thread will go south pretty soon!!

Paranoia is often exhibited by folks in the early stages of Alzheimer's. That can make it hard to get them the treatment they need, since they don't trust the folks that are trying to help them.

so who's your boss with all those threats and
intimidation . does he work for the U.S. gov .

Dave what makes you think he is going downhill? I have a very good friend, retired Army who is from WV. I talk to him almost daily. He's in his late 40's. He is disgusted at all the folks that are on "assistance" and see nothing wrong with it and are not trying to get off of assistance! Heck I'm 56 and he has told me that I could pick up on good looking 21 yo females in WV simply by flashing my retired ID and VA card in a bar. Plus if he has not been in the States for a while he may be shocked at the changes.

Rick

I think he's been on the internet, thats doomsday stuff is all over. People are talking civil war just just about anywhere you go now..

Did anyone think about the possibility that Obamby is spending the USA to the end of the Earth so that the US will have ZERO money........And then there is no money for the defense department, so the enemies walk right in and take the USA (easy pickens)
I hope I am dead wrong.

Gun guru, you and me must have been in the same line when brains were given out. I agree 100% Dave

The two of you have lived in Germany how long? And how many great changes- any changes? since re-unification? He should have burned his bridges. Ever hear the expression "you can't go home again"???? He is going thru a terrible form of 'culture shock' from too long away. When did he join? 1958-60? The USA was a different planet back then! Tell him to take a train to the amalfi coast next vacation. And I bet your boss won't mind conversations about topless women either...

A retired Sergeant Major should certainly have known to keep his mouth shut about politics in your workplace. I wouldn't rule out dementia. Been through it with my mom.

Having been raised by a Master Sgt & First Sgt, an E-7, I know how they can be. He retired just as the NCO super ranks, E-8 & E-9, were brought into the chain of command. Anyhoo, my Dad would have known better than to run his mouth in an inappropiate location. He taught me the same. When I enlisted one of the few things he told me...'Keep your mouth shut & don't volunteer for anything.'. I agree with MarkB, it may be the first onset of dementia. I see it in my ma-in-law. Most of the time, she's OK but will just up and say the most off the wall sh*t you ever heard.
