local electric coop scam...

seems the new board of our local electric coop decided to be pc and setup a help the poor slush fund...they decided to round up everybody's monthly bill to the next dollar and throw proceeds into this fund...dont get me wrong...i help those in true need most times, but to just take money like that...lets just say they got a earfull yesterday when i opted out...its kinda like the Texas Young Farmer fee we pay on farm truck license...automatically added on and you gotta jump thru hoops to get it refunded...our local tax office just hands everybody the refund forms when we renew our plates...nobody i've talked to lets state keep money.

Ours started rounding up a few years ago for the same reason, although you can opt out of it and pay the actual amount if you choose.

Our electric coop also does the round up, but if I recall correctly, we had to tell them yes we want to participate by checking a box on a bill a couple of years ago. All the money raised stays local, so I don't have the least concern about this being PC. Just a good way for folks to help other folks.

Welcome to "help the poor even if you dont want to" program.
I think that most electric companies are like this, and the natural gas company and of course the food stamps, which you pay for through taxes.

Seems like just more whining to me. If you want to do it, do it, if you don't want to do it, don't. Can't get much simpler than that...

I am sure it is 100% voluntary. Our Operation RoundUp money stays within our COOP service area. It funds many VFD"s, 4H groups, PTO projects and similar groups that are having a tough time raising funds today

Our electric Co op up at my land did that a few years ago also. Theirs was automatic unless you called or wrote to op out.
I did neither - just paid the bill to the penny -without the round up charge. Never heard a word from them about it.

I guess I just throw money away. I would be ashamed of making an a$$ out of myself for the less than $12 a year this is going to cost you to help some one with less. Many times those needing help with electric bills are elderly.

around here co-op's use to work pretty good for the original purpose they were intended for not any more it's a money game guest who supplies the money, little items among many ,years back meter fee was a base rate amount say $5.00 until your usage exceeded that amount then extra for the rest of your usage, now its flat rate plus your usage plus fuel adjustment, ect, need a tap built, under ground service,$$$$,funny thing after some of these changes there operating centers went from modest buildings to mega centers with all the bells and whistles same thing with vehicles & equip.weren't long before they were buying and building buildings for lease for economic development centers an so on
