Guys, That is a Texas Hill Country Deer Stand! 4 sides,4 hunters! one each direction. Shoot a deer when you have the chance, or... If the deer movement is slow to non existent that day..... Shut the windows turn up the LP heater, play cards, eat jerky and MREs. Watch football games on the little portable TV!
Next week tell all the guys at work, in the larger town where you live just how hard you did hunt sitting the the cold waiting for that perfect deer to show up!LOL!!!

And all this time I thought it was only an old saying "[i:654c4848f0]built like a brick outhouse[/i:654c4848f0]".

Don"t see many of these in rural areas of NE Texas.

I'd guess a pump house over a cistern or well, build up mound to provide gravity flow for the cistern, or to provide flooding protection for a well.

I'm sure it's something totally different tho!

Paul, you got it!
The bore is in a valley that is very flood prone. Huge floods have filled the valley in the past. The pump house is built above the bore, and raised to provide flood immunity.
It's no longer in use, but I looked at it a couple of times and had to climb up and check it out.
Cheers,
Rex

Rex I see the tree in the background, looks like a eucalyptus tree. The eucalyptus trees were imported from Australia to my area years ago to be used as rail road ties. They never worked under the rails for some reason. They grow like weeds around here. They are the best fire wood we have. A grove of the trees if left unattended will turn into a real fire hazard. You may have the wrong trees for sleepers, they used River Red Gum [E. Camaldulensis]. still on the tracks here but slowly being replaced with concrete in some areas, as they decompose, and that takes eons..
Don't camp under them because they have a habit of self pruning.
Various reports of Caravans being squashed and occupants killed.
