There is allot of good info on purple martins on line. Just in case anyone is interested.

Here's an interesting map on expected arrivals.

Living in north Georgia I have watched the Martins for over 50 years and have always enjoyed watching them . They arrive somewhere between march 6th and march 12, alway look forward to seing them . Spring is close . Rodney Middleton

I built a wooden martin house back in the mid 1960's and I had martins the first year and every year after that. I had them in 1972 and we had a freak rain storm that summer when it dumped 7 or 8 inches of rain. It hit PA hard too. One evening when came home from work and my wife said there's something wrong in the martin house. She said there's a terrible odor
and when I took down the house all the baby birds had drowned. Never had martins after that
we even bought a fiberglass and an aluminium house. They would fly over , but never stayed and built any nests. I scrapped the wooden house. I have a picture of it somewhere here on the computer. Good luck on your martins you will really like them around. When I had them and mowed grass they would just look down from the martin house. Hal

Here is a picture of my tenants last July. I think they fledged
about 30. I had more Martins last year than I ever have.

I hope you have good luck attracting some birds.

(quoted from post at 01:34:34 01/05/12) Close them holes up, till just a week or so before the martins show up. Keeps out the undesirables.

I guess I should have talked to you and read the information I supplied myself.

I'll take it back down until its time and then keep an eye on those undesirables.

I think i'll go ahead and ad a few gourds as well.

I'm having fun and hope I can attract some of these critters.

Good luck on getting the birds to come. I have 2 houses and no luck. I put them near the fish pond hoping to keep the 'skeeter population down.

Will keep trying.

I'd like to get a Martin house built this winter. My brother had his up, next to his pond, for 3 or 4 years before he got the first pair. They've been back every year since, about 8 yrs. That house is full along with 4 gourds. He wants to put another house up before they return in the spring.

Good luck attracting them, sometimes it takes awhile...... just keep the junk birds cleaned out.
