throwout bearing

Have a 4020 gas. Have heard folks talk about throw out bearings. Whats it do? Where's it at and does it need greased?

The throwout bearing is what your clutch fork pushes on to disengage your clutch. It pushs the "fingers" on the pressure plate and relieves pressure on the clutch disk. No it does not get lubed

A throw out bearing is used to disengage the clutch. When you push your clutch pedal in, the bearing contacts the fingers on the clutch pressure plate thus releasing the spring loaded tension of pressure plate that is holding the clutch driving disc in contact with the flywheel. The bearing is mounted on a sleeve that is moved with a fork attached to the clutch release shaft. Some are greaseable, some are sealed. At any rate, even if it does have a grease fitting on the sleeve, you need to turn the bearing while gently applying grease to zerk to actually get grease in bearing with out it going all over where you don't want it and it takes very little.

In an over simplified answer - throwout bearing

is used on hand clutch ( over center locking

type) and normal foot clutch uses a clutch

release bearing to disengage the clutch .

Check your owners manual. The PTO clutch on a late 4020 has a grease fitting on the side of the transmission case for the throwout bearing on the PTO clutch. I'm not sure about the early models. But the main drive clutch doesn't have that problem.

My Farmall Super "A" has 2 halves to the T.O. bearing races. When you grease the fitting in the collar , it forces grease up into the split and grease's the bearing. It could well be the original , but it's still operating smoothly...

Early 4020s originally had grease zerks for the pto bearing and throwout bearing. PTO zerk is on left side of clutch housing ahead of clutch pedal. Throwout bearing zerk is inside clutch housing after removing bottom cover. Some replacement bearings are sealed and do not need grease.I remove the zerk if installing a sealed bearing. Late 4020s (side console) only have the PTO zerk. Hope this helps.
