picked up this doo-dad in a box of stuff. guy that had it said it was a tank telescope. tag on it says TELESCOPE M5A1 NO 579 W.P.B. SPENSER LENS CO 1940. it has crosshairs in the optics, but it does not seem to magnify anything. some kind of early ww2 spotting scope maybe??

Artillery gun would make sense. They don't aim at a target as such but at aiming stakes (close in no magnification needed) that are surveyed to the location for gun orientation. Old time each gun would have an aiming stake in a battery (4-6 guns) to keep all guns oriented for point of fire.

Also and/or motors which I think might also be considered artilery?? We had 4.2 motor sguards along with scouts, rifle, and tank sectiongs in the Recon troup that I served in in the Army. Armand
