So am I the only one?

Seems like all the New Years wishes on here are saying good ridence to 2011 like it was the worst year ever. I know some parts of the country had weather problems, but am I the only one who had a fairly decent year to be thankful for? Well,me and Dave in Minnesota anyway. He seemed to be trying to get rid of some money at the end of the year.
As for me,yes we had a cold wet spring that put me behind til Thanksgiving, but the feedlot is full of valuable cattle,I put up a whale of a bunch of hay,the silo and corn cribs are full, the pastures were good. We paid off the last little bit of debt we had last winter, bought Mama a new set of store bought teeth. I just HOPE the new year turns out as well as the last one.

So one last time,Happy New Year to everybody.

I agree with you over all. I still have my 2 sons, now in their 20's at home and we all did OK last last year. My wife and I have reasonably stable jobs, my oldest son finally got a full time job that will be stable and my youngest is still in college. We paid the bills with a little left for some fun. We did see my father in law and our dog pass away but both were at ages where it wasn't unexpected. After a miserable spring my little farm did all right. I know a lot of people had bad years with jobs, home, etc but I guess in our case no news was good news.

How do you know 2012 will be worse? In my opinion, only if Prez external_link gets re-elected. Otherwise, it's a toss-up, depending on the weather, European debt problems, and a whole bunch of other factors that the average guy has no control over. As for me, I'm just going to live within my means, pay cash for everything I need, farm expenses included and only borrow if I buy some new fangled piece of farm equipment.

don't have a crystal ball, either....just a gut feeling.

Won't say it was a good one or a bad one. Crops got in the ground late but got in , crops cam off late but came off and were descent Equipment broke down so whats new there . I was able o get up each day with out dirt in my face so that was a plus . Was short on money but whats new about that . Family is for the most part healthy still have good friends that are willing to help the best they can . So all in all it was a pretty good bad year , not the first and i am sure not the last . But we made it thru and come Dec 31 , 2012 we will see how it stacked up.

2011 was the best year in 17 years for me. Nothing happened. Business didn't fail, house didn't catch fire, ice storm did't crush my shop, mechanic didn't destroy any of my vehicles, text message lady didn't run over me and cripple me in the process of destroying my truck and trailer and I didn't have to sue anybody for non-payment of work. Uneventful is bliss.

In most aspects 2011 was a great year. Lost a very close couson, like a brother, this past fall. Managed to beat the rarest and deadliest form of pancreatic cancer, only to die from an undetected liver infection complication from the very treatment that killed the cancer. The man battled for 2 years, never losing hope, trying every possible natural and medical options he could find. The whole time he never lost faith, continiued to trap, fish, hunt, and even shot a bear with a bow 2 weeks before he died. Went to bed with anticipation of crappie fishing the next day, never woke up, infection has poisened him. So, even a bad year will be appreciated as it is one more year I was able to enjoy life, and all its joy and pain, that many others did not. Farming 2011 was a great year, moisture pattern better change from what it has been since late july, or I will be looking at some very sad crops come next fall.

Well, Randy, I for one don't believe flipping the page on a calendar will change my fortune.

That being said, 2011 was a nasty year for us. Wife had cancer - still undergoing chemo - quite sick much of the time. Fortunately the heavy duty chemo is over now, just once a month. But she's not bouncing back very fast.
I caught my hand in the lever that pulls up the needles on the baler and got a nasty injury. First field I baled this year. That has healed, but was a big handicap all summer. Ended up doing all my haying singlehandedly - no pun intended. Just don't try to arm wrestle me left handed. Injured hand healed, but still not back to normal.
Then we lost a couple dear family members.

SO HERE"S TO 2011 - (holding one hand up with one finger extended) - GLAD YOU'RE OVER.

external_link is only a pawn. It doesn't matter who gets elected these people are not going to give up just because of that. They have been working hard for years dumming this country down by giving out rations and making people think they are owed a living. It will get worse. What do you think all this OCCUPY bull is all about? George Soros is not about to quit just because of an election.

Not opposed to talking politics but wasn't really lookin to. If you hang you success and happiness on who wins elections,I fear you'll be pretty disapointed and miserable most of the time. That's all.

Haven't had a bad year since 2002. We've had a few glitches along the way but they were all recoverable. Looking forward to RAIN in 2012. Could you easterners spare a little? jim

Glad some of you guys had a good year. I have lost money the last 3 years and things dont seem to look any better.

Well lets see had 3 tractors down during planting, had to use old ones to finnish.Had another dry year.An earthquake here+ one in japan. Then just as the crops were near ready had a hurricane come through and lost 25% plus 2 dozen down trees. On the tax forms it might look like a decant year, but was lots of hard work.Hopeing for better next year.

I feel pretty good about the past year, both my wife & I lost weight, our health is better. My wife's biz is doing ok, and we are relocating that, closer to home by 20 miles. We are really pumped up about that, as we bought a building for her, she won't have to pay rent anymore. All in all, a pretty good year, and God willing, next year will be more of the same.

Even with the goofy Michigan weather we had I still had a prosperous year on my small farm. My pension check showed up every month on time. Didn't have to draw on my IRA which also made some money. I even ended up with a school bus driving job that I wasn't even looking for. My wife and I have maintained our good health. We even made a 9200 mile motorcycle trip to Alaska and back in one piece. I am thankful for our good year and hope to have another good year. I hope those of you that had a bad year have a better one in 2012.

Looking back, I'd say it was a good year for me. Crops were not the best, too wet in spring and too dry in summer. Sold some corn and beans for more $$ than I ever dreamed possible. Overtime at work all year( averaged 13 hours/week), still haven't figured out why I didn't get much accomplished this year. Wife and I are healthy, kids are too. Our son got off the sub and is a Navy recruiter in Des Moines, so we get to see them regularly. The rum soaked raisins are keeping the arthritis under control, so I don't hurt all the time. The Lord has blessed me and my guardian angel works overtime. Ya, it was a great year. Chris

2011 was an average year for me until September when my only child passed away. So I expect 2012 can only be better. Happy New Year to you rrlund and all who read this. TDF

I really grieve for you. My momma told me to have lots of kids so that if you loose one you have the others. Well we had 4 and I lost my very best son just before he was to be married and to celebrate his 21st birthday.

I noticed yesterday that John Travolta is still grieving about his son. Feel for the guy.

But life goes on, it happens to a lot of us, we don't like it but that's life.....enjoyed them while they were in our custody.

Best Regards,

Mark

2011 was an OK year for us. We both kept on doing a lot of volunteer work for our community, no major health issues, the pension check was on time. Our little farm was a challenge, too wet to plant, too dry to get a great yield, but we did get crops off and we're not lookin' at standing beans in the field. Our family had a good year too so we're happy and looking forward to 2012. I was able to purchase the 1942 Farmall H my grandfather bought new and I had an article published in Green Magazine, so those were my tractor highlights of the year. Hope you all have a great 2012!
