Just bought a 1979 jd 310a. The price was right, hydraulics are strong as well as engine. Prevoius owner was using machine and it suddenly would not go into reverse. He parked it 6 months ago, and now the clutch is frozen. Can anyone tell me how to free it so I can start dianosing the other problem?

Explain frozen? Doesn't release? If yes, get her running and warmed up. Shut it off and put it in gear, start her up in gear (might be best to park it facing down a hill, easier on the starter).

Once running in gear, jerk the throttle up and down, try and run up hills etc all with the clutch pedal depressed. Be at the ready, it may break free when you least expect it.

I've seen extremely bad cases where you had to do all of the same, while under a load, pulling a losd or implement.

(quoted from post at 21:31:10 12/27/11) Thanks for the reply. I can't push the clutch in, and the linkage seems ok.

Have you applied generous amounts of your favorite penetrating oil to the clutch pedal shafts pivot points???????????

Follow the clutch pedal and check the pivots. SOmething is probably stuck. As far as the reverser goes... Check the linkage and make sure that a pin hasn't fallen out of that. Otherwise it doesn't sound good...
If you do get into it deep, you'll probably have better luck going to an AG dealer for parts. Some stuff has been obsoleted on the mainline parts list but an AG dealer probably has sense enough to look in A&I for what you might need...

Not real familiar with a 310, but had a problem with a 4030 once. Tractor would shift, but always seemed to grind a bit getting it into gear. Man said it always seemed to shift hard for him when he had it. Was under the tractor one day fooling with something and found a small hunk of wood stuck under the operating arm where the shaft went into the transmission case that was causing the arm to not disengage the clutch the whole way. Never had anymore shifting problems after that. Just might be worth a look-see.
