My brother was doing some work on a friends 98 f 150, and while washing off battery he got some water where it shoulden't have been, and now the engine has a miss. He said the plugs are real deep. Will it hurt the computor to remove one plug wire while the engine is running to find the cylinder that has the miss? Any other way to find the cylinder with the miss? Thanks Stan

got one of them poniter thermomitor ? real handy for this point and read the manafold at each cylinder and see what one is cooler --

pull the wires or coils whichever it has, and blow the water out of the spark plug wells or it wont go away

Auto zones computer will tell you where the miss is. However make sure you know exactly where the cylinder is. Guy told me #1 on a Ford. At one time I knew, but I forgot. He said, left front. I even changed the injector, plug, and coil over on number 5 to no avail. Turned out he shoulda told me right front. Isn't everything on vehicle considered from drivers seat? I will dig out manual next time or buy one. Dave

(quoted from post at 08:46:54 12/27/11) It should have coil over plugs no wires.

Actually that's incorrect.

The '97s & '98s didn't have the COP's
I believe the COP's (coils over plugs) began with the '99 model year.

Agree with the above comment - don't fight the computer - use it, it will probably tell you which one is missing...

The years of backyard diagnosing are over folks.
Find someone with a scanner and save yourself a lot of torment......
