Yep, all the time at the shop. Instead of a 250 dollar cluster and labor,and if you are handy with a solder gun,you can replaced the stepper motors in them for like 4 bucks a piece. The aftermarket shops that fixed them for GM when they were under warr. made a quick fortune. Take your time and it is not that bad to do.
 
Check with your Chevy dealer. IIRC you may be entitled to one free gauge cluster change even if you're out of warranty.

It is a common problem and there was a recall on the truck for this. My speedo went crazy, but it was still under warranty.
 
Common issue. I fooled with mmine for a long time and finally bit the bullet and sent it to Southern Electronics in Richmond. They put in new stepper motors on a one day turnaround and its worked great ever since. Google up the YouTube video on pulling the cluster. My biggest issue was the fuel gage- a PITA with a deisel!
