210 C Deere Backhoe or Case 580 D Backhoe

I don't know a lot about the 580D case but know much about the 210C since we sold them new.

The 210C uses a lot of Deere-only proprietary parts. The early ones also had a vibration problem because Deere cheaped out and left the balancing shafts out of the engine. The later engines had them back in.

I assume the Case has the Cummins 4B engine? If so, it would be my choice, even though I was a Deere mechanic for much of my life. I suspect it is a much simpler machine with more generic parts.

Don't know anything about the Deere, but I cut my operating teeth on a 580D. I loved it.

The engine was easy starting and purred like a kitten even after many hours racked up on it. It was only 2WD, but that's not a problem for a good operator.

It was a 4 stick extend-a-hoe with pedal swing, which might not suit the modern operator, but I really liked the controls once I was used to them.

The 'D' will have the little Case 207? I believe. Those hoes predate the the 'B'... I think the 580E was the first to use a Cummins... and even the early models of the E had the 207.

Like I said, I'm not up on the Case stuff. My 580CK had a 188 and now has a 207D. Great engine.

My neighbor has a Case 580 something with the Cummins 3.9. I never knew what model since there is no lettering on it. Older though.

I've been looking for a Cummins 4BT with Chevy trans bolt pattern for my pickup truck - but never found one cheap enough yet.

The case is a lot bigger machine, 14K vs. 10K lbs.

I have ran a 210C and a 580K (1990), little newer than a D (1980ish). As far as room, the 210C is like a submarine. I struggled getting in and out and swinging the seat around. Case a lot more room, still tight to the knees on the controls. Also ran a JD310D, same size as the Case.

Advantages: More power, size, etc with the Case. The 210c is gonna dig a little slower just due to size. But it will be a little lighter if you are having to get across a lawn etc.

Guess it depends what you are going to use it for. Never owned any of them, just ran them, so can"t tell you about reliability.
