portable air compressor

Hey,
got a little portable kompressor (5 gallon tank and enough flow for a paint gun and short spurts of an air gun or blaster) that just went hooters up....... Gonna replace it but want to be able to use some air tools if needed and have better sprayer capability....(better to have and not need than need and not have yaknow....)

Want to stay to a handleable size tho also. What should I be looking for as far as capacity etc??? Brand recommendations won't do me much good because they may not be available here, just the flow(??)/capacity.

Thanks, Dave

I saw the cutest little compressor in the farm store
the other day. It was built like the wheeled
portable but only about a 1 gal tank and a handle to
carry it. If I had a boy I would buy it and put
wheels on it and a handle to push it around!

I was recently given a nearly new 10 gallon, 2 HP direct drive oil-lubricated compressor. PO gave up on it when it would not start in cold weather (would trip the breaker motor overload), and failed to develop full pressure even in warm weather.

I replaced the original oil fill (a very stiff, unknown goop) with 5W-30, then found/tightened several leaky fittings on the pressure switch and check valve. It now starts fine in the cold and makes plenty of air.

It's a cheaply built unit and noisy as hell. But for what I've got invested it's a good back-up compressor for occasional use. Also it's small/light enough to load easily in the trunk of my wife's car.

New it lists for $130 at Tractor Supply. Harbor Freight, Sears, Home Depot, etc offer similar compressors in the same price range.

Dave, Was your compressor oil filled or oil-less?

I have oil filled compressors, oldest 60+, another 30+, two others 20+ and never had a problem with them. Had an oil-less and it was noisy, flew fuses, top heavy, and the compressor went hooters up within a short time, I rebuilt it and the second time it went hooters up I said it isn't worth rebuilding.

If I had to buy another compressor, guess what kind I would buy?

Made the "shocking" discovery that a new addition chewed the cord a little..... Back in business now

Don't use it enough to justify a new one just because so I'll hafta hold off on tool shopping awhile.....
