Caterpillar Twenty Two

I have several questions. First I am buying 4 old Caterpillars. 3 Twenty twos. One has a dozer blade and roll cage from 1935. the other two are crawlers 1936. two have PTO"s and one has some sort of lowered Extended seat out the back... (I think it was made for Mexico, already lowered) LOL.. the fourth is a Cat 35 with a seized engine. From what i know all 3 Twenty twos ran 5 years ago and none of the engines are seized. Comparing them to what i"ve found on the internet they are in pretty good shape. I will have more questions regarding restoring them. but they all appear complete. I cant find hardly anything about the 35 is this a more uncommon model? also, one has a sticky clutch on one side. How hard are the clutches to rebuild?

There is a construction board here, Crawler, dozers, loaders ect on YT.

Drop me an email (go to modern view) for the addy to a good cat site.

The Thirty-Five, was apparently the model to fill the gap for the discontinued Thirty PS series, 1728 tractors built from 1932-1934, available in 56" gauge and 74" gauge (center of track to center of track). A model Thirty-Five complete and hopefully a decent undercarriage, (track components and associated wear to each, which has to be measured to be determined, well to be accurate anyway!) would be a desirable tractor, not many produced and how many left today. Seized motor on one of these is worth repairing, hopefully, just stuck rings from rust/condensation. Not a tractor to try and tow or break free in a similar fashion, you would want to take that motor apart and see whats what, these older Caterpillars may not be the easiest to find parts for nowadays.

The Twenty-Two, 9999 built between 1934-1939, available in 40" or 50" gauge. Pto was an option, and nice to complement the ones you have. The one with the lowered seat you describe, sounds like an orchard model. Those usually have tin covering the tracks, specific to orchard work. The steering clutch/brake, I'm not familiar with, there are or may be ways to attempt freeing them up, have to see what they look like, often times from sitting, need to work em again, not sure what dissassembly is needed on these if they need to be done, you need to get the servicemans reference book, parts book, and operators instructions for these tractors.

That Thirty Five could be a sought after tractor, the 22's are common, predecessor to the D2 series. Hopefully some help, also remember there are 2 antique caterpillare forums, ACMOC, ACME and the one Oldtanker mentioned here, where some of those people participate here as well.

Sounds like you may be in CA, lots of old caterpillars out there.

Thanks! i'll check that out. I just joined today
because i'm getting these tractors without knowing
alot about them. Kinda new to the game but after 3
days of research i'm comfortable with what i'm
paying and the condition they are in. Not sure how
to do the Modern view but i'll try to figure it out.

Hi Billy,
Thanks for the info! yes i've found alot about the Twenty Two's, and the reason i was interested was because i'm putting in a fish pond and am able to buy the 3 twenty two's for what it was going to cost to rent a larger dozer to do the work. The 35 really interested me because of the lack of info on the web about it...LOL. Kinda figured it was pretty uncommon and like you said i was wondering if it was to fill in between the 30 and a later model. but it is BIG compared to the 22's. as far as towing it onto the trailer when i move them... i was hoping the 22 could pull it up on to it?? They are all in really good condition considering the age and the undercarriage,(without measuring) looks to be in very good shape. I think the previous owner showed one of them as it is much cleaner than the other 2. The one you said might be an orchard model doesnt have the larger tin covers over the track. but it has narrow tracks, the other two are wide tracks.(about 14 inches i think without measuring them)

No problem, you should be able to pull the thirty five with a twenty two, that is if the tracks are not seized up, track type tractors roll easily. Has to be good find, one source of parts is I believe Zimmerman's, he's not on the web, but ACMOC/ACME people can get the info on him, he has a large salvage place for these, and more on the older ones like the thirty five, both those antique forums/clubs are great resources for these, people are very helpful.

Might take longer with an older slower tractor, but once that pond is done, you have an instant collection and hobby at your disposal, hope to see some photos of these, nice find, best of luck with them !
