Got home at the right time today

When I got home today, there was a truck hooked up to the trailer I haul my tractor on. Trailer is in the yard, ground is soft. Even though they had a 4 wheel drive they were stuck(bald tires). Called sheriff and arrested them. Told deputy to impound the truck as my yard was damaged. Called my lawyer and he got a lien put on the truck until my yard was fixed or I received a cash settlement to repair the yard. They can't get the truck back until this is taken care of. If my yard doesn't get repaired by a certain time,I get the truck. 2009 Silverado HD 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive, 6.0 liter engine, 4 speed automatic, tow package and reciever hitch, all the bells & whistles with 32,000 miles. Figure they'll repair the yard and Iwon't get the truck. I did press charges.

A cop I worked with lived across the river in Elizabeth, Indiana. He had a few acres and the house was 600 feet off the road. His front yard was just as long and wide. A road crew finished up for the night and drove well up his driveway and parked two backhoes, asphalt spreader and dump truck all over his yard. When they got back the next morning he wouldn't let them have their equipment. They called the sheriff and he said to bad. They paid for the rut repair in his yard.

Take the computer out of the truck just in case they make good on the payment. That way they will have to pay for a tow and a computer. You don't want to know what I would do to it.

Makes you wonder what some people are thinking? It isn't like the trailer would not be missed, and there is little way to think they could have gotten away with stealing it from your home. We had some meth head break into our place while we were in Lake Charles. He would have gotten away with it if he hadn't had his mail forwarded to our address. I suppose the idea of a criminal genuis is something you only see on television. I can't help but ask, who was the master mind of these crimes? Who turned to the rest and convinced them that they could actually get away with stupid crimes? Who made the case to the other delinquents and said, "We can steal that trailer from the owners home in broad daylight, and no one will ever be the wiser"?

Maybe it's wrong on my part, but I hope you end up with the truck. And they should still have to pay for fixing the yard. And they should still spend some time in the clink.

If the truck has a previous lien on it, here in Iowa, you will be 2nd in line to get paid. I would unhook your trailer and put the truck up on blocks untill you get paid. Do not remove the wheels or disable it other than putting it on blocks. If the payments are behind and the finance company comes for it, they can cause you grief if you disabled it.

Why would anyone who could afford a low mileage 2009 diesel truck need to steal a trailer?

Unless it was "borrowed".

I was told on this sight that locks only keep honest people honest. Was your trailer locked? If not, then you may have caused a honest person to become a thief.

I have 4 different locks on my trailer. So far, I've keep the people in my neighborhood honest.

Are you going to do anything different to prevent this from happening again.

Glad you caught them. Good idea to impound their truck too.

George

If you're trying to calculate the odds that you will be getting to keep the truck, it would probably go down to if the truck is stolen, and if the theives go to jail. If they go to jail, they won't be getting the truck back. Do you know of many others who have experienced the unexplained lose of large iron stuff, tractors, implements etc? If you are the only victim that they can be charged for, I figure that even if they are convicted, they will likely only get probation from our revolving door judical system. They will then want their truck back, meaning they would be motivated to pay or repair what they must to be reunited with their means to ply their dishonest trade. Let's be serious. They are going to want to get right bact to their careers, and will need a good heavy duty truck to haul other peoples stuff away. The court would take a bite out of crime, if they just banned these fellows from owning a truck for a few years.

Truck's got low miles. Mostly "yard" miles too. Be a downright shame if that truck was vandalized , out there all unprotected in your yard what with you obviously being gone a lot. And you living in that high crime area , where people will steal right out of your yard , in broad daylight ! I'd be surprised if something did not happen to a truck like that under those circumstances.

Did you have any interaction with the occupants of the truck, no explanation of being there? This sounds a little odd , lots of info on truck but nothing on the perps.

I'll bet the truck is stolen too. Not many people buy a $40K truck and use it as a get away vehicle.

On second thought... you can tell how much money a person makes by the vehicle they drive. Maybe I need to become a metal scrapper.

Glad you caught them, and I hope you make it extremely painful and difficult for them.

Rick

How do you propose to do that with the truck impounded? That truck is not anymore on your property but in a goverment facility. And if the truck was stolen the registered owner has the lein to take care of and not the theif.

Odds are against you getting to keep the truck. Probably stolen and they probably have nothing of value you can get from them. They will get a small jail sentence and you will be lucky you got your trailer back. Honest man just about always loses.

Be careful with holding that truck. Can do that in Indiana as well. A few years ago near me some kids were out in a corn field doing Figure-8's and all kinds of damage, and the owner caught them, held them until the Sheriff showed up and took the driver and a passenger into custody. The farmer, owner opted to hold the truck which he could do legally. And just to make sure that it didn't go anywhere from where he stopped it, he used his small dozer to push dirt up to the front and back, locking it in place. Sometime during one of the nights that he had it, it got picked clean of all of its nifty parts, tires, and all kinds of stuff. The farmer, owner found himself owning more to the kid that owned that truck than the kid owed him for the damage he did to the crops. Noone ever found out if it was the kid that owned it, one of his friends, or jus another bad guy. At least in Indiana, part of confiscating property, like that truck, is assuming responsibility for its safety.

Glad you caught the low life predatores, but just be careful that the predatores don't turn the tables and become the victims. And, with what our society is becoming, it doesn't take much for the bad guys to have people take their sides to make the actual victims the bad guys.

Good luck.

Mark

Let us know what happens when this all shakes out. Betcha you don"t come out on top when all is said and done. Lucky if you get your trailer back, ruts filled in.

This is not the first time these two have been in trouble. It's the driver truck, not stolen. They're in their early 20's. The county sheriff's dept. is holding the truck until judge rules on it. And yes I had a ball inthe hitch with the threads cut off, hitch was locked, and had the tandem axle tires chained together and locked. All were cut off.

I have a 20'x8' bed stake rails and sits about three feet up. I have ramps for it, but my best security is the pintle eye. When the meth head came a stealing here, he couldn't hook to it. It is still where it sat before I went to Lake Charles.

Well it is because they can.

A friend of mine was just telling me of a distant low live relative of his that had $130 in his pocket and got busted stealing a $5 item from a store. When caught and given an out by simply paying for the item decided he didn't want it and just wanted to return it. To the stores credit they said nope, deals off, and called the cops.

Frank,
My trailer security consists of a GorillaGuard, which protects the ball, 2 master locks, one is protected by 4x4 box tubing. Also have a wheel lock, which is more for show. Been thinking of a design to protect the other master lock. My experience is that bolt cutters can cut locks and chains in a heart beat, that is why I came up with the box tubing idea and use the GorillaGuard.

PLEASE DON'T TELL ME AGAIN THAT LOCKS ARE TO KEEP HONEST PEOPLE HONEST. If nothing else, my efforts may take a thief a little longer and hopefully get caught.

I remove my jack handle to put a mirror on the jack post. It make it real easy to see while I'm backing up to hook up to the trailer.

I would be interested in seeing if someone has a design to protect the hitche's padlock from bolt cutters.

One way to slow the thieves is to remove the trailer tire and store them some where else. If they are determined they can bring wheels to put on, but this is time comsuming. To be really serious, remove the wheels and hubs, grease the spindles to resist rust, and cover the axles with something. Best bet is to have good insurance.

WOW, we use our trailer almost daily, all thos theft deterents would cause a lot of bad words around our farm.

Must be the difference between a tool and an ornament.
