7.3 powerstroke fuel bowl element

I know that pickups aren"t the same as tractors. I have what I think is a simple problem that some of you might be able to help me with.
The fuel bowl element on my 95 powerstroke went bad. I know it is that because the 30 amp fuse that controls it and the glow plug solenoid kept going bad and the solenoid has already been changed. Still had the problem so I unplugged the element and the problem was solved.
I took the bowl lid off and the filter out, drained the bowl and have a plastic shaft that the filter sits down over (with a small thin plate under it and the element beneath that). How do I get that shaft/plate out of the way? Tried a 7/8 crows foot and it didn"t want to turn, was afraid I"d round it off (plastic).
Ideas or experience?????
