Ot Basement progress

Here's the lastest adventure . South wall is nothing but unstable soil.Gas line was trenched in when house built and it's all fill dirt, no virgin soil . Kept fighting cave ins so had to build wooden wall to hold soil back ,,back filled it . As fella told me ,"It don't take much to hold soil in place,,but lots to stop it once it moves. Mighta been that Billy guy ? lol
Looking to set forms , pour footings and let block layers do their thing real soon .

Very inspirational for me as I'm doing similar,even my steel shores are the same as yours.I wish Billy was my neighbour,that feller is talented.

Living in Iowa I can say this: Better move faster this mild weather won't last too much longer. You might think about covering the soil with blue tarps to keep snow moisture out. If that unstable soil gets wet, your cribbing wall willnot hold back wet soil. The domino effect will bring down your house. But you already know that. The best to you on an enormous project Merry Christmas and Happy new year gobble

Nice job. How deep was the original crawl space? Is the "L" shaped pipe the electric service that will remain outside the basement wall? Do you put the plastic barrier and weep tiles under the footing as well as the floor?

Friend of mine did the same thing,house fell,they called the Ins co. and they said tought luck,you never bought a construction policy

Now you have some room to work, that sand can be a pain to deal with in any cut, and or the material that has been disturbed at one time since you said it was collapsing. So, in the 3rd photo, new footing, wall under that sill plate aligned with the existing short wall ?

I'm not sure if I recall stating difficulty stopping the momentum of collapsing soil, LOL (names changed to protect the innocent) but at least your depth is what it is, or you would need soldier piles, lagging, and possibly some bracing or meeting the criteria for the angle of repose, for the cut to keep a 45 degree slope.

I'll bet that skidsteer is the handiest tool on that job!

Whilst overseeing the construction of a 3500'-0" dual temp pipe line in Brooklyn, NY almost 20 years ago, while trenching and shoring for one of the 5 23 story building supply and return lines, a live 6" natural gas supply line was in jeopardy, due to trench collapse, instinctively jumped into the trench and helped shore it, secure and hold until the rest of the timbermen (local 1536 I think) were able to join in and complete the task, tense situation, but safely overcome.

My only experience with a project like that is a neighbor"s house, and my son"s house, which was moved in. Both cases, the shoring was many timbers, each shoring was about 4 feet square. I wouldn"t walk under what I see.....and you talk about unstable sand?......hope it works for you....

No,the sand is the virgin stabil soil,,the back fill outside is the stuff giving us fits .Rest of house is set on new block wall already . This is just one run . Inside posts are set on 24x24 pads . Not going anywhere .

All of the soil loads can be calculated once you know the angle of repose(Phi)of the existing soil.
Ka= tan squared (45-Phi/2)
then depending on the height of fill the load can be determined and the span of the sheathing, the size of the vertical supports, etc can all be designed to hold the soil back in a safe manner
