extra tool box

Hey guys, I'm finding out I need a portable tool box, Instead of running up to the house or out to the barn. Was just wondering if I need anything special to put in it beside the normal sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers... What do you keep in yours?

I try to keep an 8 inch crescent & a vice grip in each tractor. I carry a set of combos in my pickup along with a couple screwdrivers, a chisel & a punch, lots of odds & ends. I keep a claw hammer in each out building. So I'm never too far from something that will work. I don't use a tool box much. My tools hang on the wall.

If you were like me, you wouldn't have to worry.... You'd already have 3's and 4's of all tools cause you forgot you had them and rebought. Just have to get an extra box to put them in... Which you already have and forgot about.... You'll have discovered inner peace Grasshopper, when you have evened out the number of sets and boxes

I keep a couple of 12" crescents, combination screwdriver, vice grips, & pliers in all the tractors, plus a few odds and ends. Saves a lot of long walks. NEighbor called on cell phone last week. Cutting wood & tractor won't start. I was in town, 1-1/2 hours later I got to him. Fixed it in 5 minutes with a crescent wrench and pocketknife(bad battery connection). That's why I carry tools.

If you are like me---Regardless of what you put in the tool box, you will need something else!! I just have basic crescent wrenches, 1/4-3/4 combination wrenches, small hammer, channel-lock pliers, flashlight, a couple of flat and phillips screwdrivers, tie wire, duct tape, and small rope.

Every Tractor has a Tool box that has in it: Hammer, vicegrips, pliers, full set combination wrenches, 12 in cressent, 8 in cressent. two flat blade screwdrivers, 1 phillips screwdriver. 2 punches, 1 chissel. small amount of smoth fence wire. The plow tractor carries plow bolts as well. The tool box on the baler carries shear bolts and spare belts as well. grab and go box is big and in addition to the tractor boxes he has: assorted sizes electrical wire, wire cutter/ striper, pack of assorted wire ends and crimping tool, circut tester, point file. breaker points, condenser and rotor for my IH tractors, Point gadge (feeler gadge) hacksaw. Key stock, hex bits and driver. assorted popular roller chain master links, assorted grease fittings, extra punches. I also have a small lunch box of all master and half link roller chain links.

I hate spreading all my tools out but it happens in hay season. I try to keep them in a 5 gallon pail. What kind of work are you doing? The tractors all each have a hammer, 6" and 10/12" adjustable, vice-grips, zip ties and a knife but the rest gets picked for the job.

A tool I never had but love now are a big set of channel locks. Never use them on bolts etc but great for other stuff.

My self I gave up on a portable tool box because by the time i got everything I wanted in it I needed a pack mule to carry it.lol. So i got a toolbox that mounted between the wheel well and the tailgate on my truck.Pretty well anywhere i need tools my trucks gona be rite there close. But if I did start carryin a portable tool box again I wouldnt forget a roll of duct tape, some electical tape and some wire strippers and crimpers always handy to keep in there.

Tote tray has hammer, 2 flat and 2 phillips screwdrivers, lg/sm chisel/ lg/sm punch, 3/8 to inch combo wrenches, pliers, side cutters, needle nose, wire stripper, black tape, round/flat files, jackknife, ten inch crescent, channel lock pliers, rolling wedge, sometimes 10 inch pipe wrench. I spray red paint on all those tools., so I know which ones go back there. Also painted one inside side yellow- all the smaller tools go to that side, easier to find. Experience shows, if I can"t fix it with that, usually needs to come to the shop. I call it my bug-out tray, in SF we learned the value of a bug-out bag...basically a survival kit for a quick exit. Every field tractor has a socket set in the cab, adj wr, pliers, combo to inch, hammer, needlenose (switching 540/1000 pto shafts). Major machines have their own toolboxes for specific parts, tools, ie, FC shovels, springs, shear pins, rivet tool, etc.
