tractor chians

Bought a set of tractor chains yesterday at an auction, listed as fitting 16-9-28 tires. Well they don't, way too short, can hook one side in the last link, but no way on the other. Sounds more like they would fit 26, or mabe 24. Chains are right for wideness. Rail links are 2 in inside, and there are 59 of them. Do any of you guys know how many links a 16-9-28 would take?

OOOps. I'd just stretch them around the tire and see how many it takes to fit.
If you get them a little loose, just stretch some rubber straps across the sides. That keeps mine tight.
I could count mine, but they're only 13.6

I could add side links, but being too short leaves a hugh open place between the ends, I guess I could fabrecate some cross bars to fill it. If I knew just what they fit correctly, I'd sell them and get a pair that fit mine.

A farm store that sells tractor chains probably will sell you the extra links and cross chain assembly you need to make the chains work. It is not difficult at all to lengthen them. My experience is that chains tend to loosen up after you have used them awhile, and mine NEED to be tightened a couple of times after I put them on. I also use several shock cords per side to keep the chains tight and properly positioned.

What did you have to pay for the used chains? I bet less than half of what new ones would cost. Good luck, chains make winter work possible with a 2wd tractor! I have been surprised at what I could get through chained up...but you still can get horribly stuck if you push it too far. BTDT!

I might look into that, these are just like new, I got them for 270. they are not the ladder type, good heavy chains.

I had to lengthen mine for my 11.6x38 tires. I found some chain to add to the side chains and I had some cross chains that were worn out on an old pair of chains at work. I took the hooks off of the cross chains and just used regular log chain to replace them. I have used them for 3 years now and there is no significant wear on the log chain links. I think that regular cross chains are a harder steel but the size I needed were about $9 each and I put less than $5 in the 6 cross chains I needed to add. Have fun.

Cole send me an email. I have a JD 5210 that has 16.9 x 28 rear tires on it. I just put a new set of chains on it last fall. The are the "H" style chains. I gave $395 for them new.

I can count how many side links and how many cross chains they have. It will be Tuesday before I can do that.

Like the others have stated most farm stores sell the cross chains by length. Usually 18, 24 or 28 inches long. So all you would have to do is buy a few and make the sides a little longer.

cole if you can hook the inside just take a hunk of wire or a bungie strap and use that to fasten the outside and then just drive around the yard a little bit and it might settle the chains down on the tire and also if they have any rust or dirt it may shake it out and then you may be able to hook them up. It would be worth a try.
