International Harv. Piston removal

The IH engine I have is a Mod.U2A and I was told that it is a 1952 C123 same as Super A My question is ; does this engine have romovable cylinder sleeves? I have 2 pistons that I am having trouble removing (water got to them)one cylinder is broken from freeze-up. I was wondering if I could take the pistons out along with the sleeves. They are probably junk anyway. Thanks for any advise you can give me. Butch

I don't know what the approved method is but I had no choice on an H I pulled out of a fence row. The tractor sat there for almost 20 years and water had leaked into the cylinders and sat there for who knows how long? I tried every concoction known to man and a few new ones and let it soak for over two years. Finally, one day as I was laying under the tractor "tapping on the piston", I saw movement. The movement was the piston and sleeve coming out as one unit. Maybe not the approved or recommended way but it worked for me. LOL.

Some time ago I was advised not to do that. I have an H with number 4 stuck - rusted tight. I was warned that the stuck condition due to rust expansion would surely crack the water jacket/block. It made sense to me and I have so far refrained from attempting that method. Lets see if opinions have changed or not.

That engine is not the same as an H so go ahead and remove the sleeve and piston together. You should press it out you will need to make a fixture to push on the sleeve and they will come out together then you can bust the cast sleeve away from the piston and save the rod. Iv done them that way with no problems. You will need to take the measurements to see which sleeve you have as it mite be the larger one that will take the 3 1/4 bore pistons and give you 135 cuin when done but you need to take all the measurements before buying new. Last price was 52 each for new sleeve and piston with rings and piston pin.

I had that same problem with a Cockshutt 30 engine. On that engine the sleeves stuck into the crankcase about 1/2". The pictures are what I made to push the pistons and sleeves out of the block. The square tube is 2" square Outside and the piece of rectangular tubing which slips up over the rod had pieces welded to it to hold it in place on the tube 3/4" threaded rod but could use smaller. You have to block the top cross piece up of the top of the block to have room for the sleeve to pop up. Nothin to it.
