Tire Chains needed 14.9 X 28

Any idea where I can get a set USED? The tractor is a 1958 Massey-Ferguson and I'm either going used or without chains in the snow. I can't justify the $300-500 price tage for new.

You might check around at a few of the road dept maintenance sheds and see if you can get some of the old chains they use on the trucks and graders then use those to make a set that will fit your tractor. I did that a few year back and got enough to make a couple sets of them. They do not look all that good but they work well and have for over a decade now.

It would help if we knew where you are. I have a set that I think were possibly used on that size. would just have to go by measurement. Think they were used on a Allis WD.

Glen........check with enny of yer OVER-the-ROAD 18-wheeler outfits. Their LAWYERS make'um change their tractor chains every year. Usually close to "free" .......chained Dell

I took a couple of sets of truck chains and made up a set of 13.6x28 chains for my massey. I worked at a large trucking company and the price was right. They work good enough for me to drag the feed grinder around the farm yard in the winter. I had problems doing so prior to using the chains. I would probably want a better set if I was using the tractor for anything more than that.

I had a hard time accepting the price so I balked on purchasing a set. I bought two sets used and they did not fit and I was planning on connecting the two then shortening as needed. It was about this time that I slid my tractor down my driveway at a high rate of speed. It ended up catty corner with the front and rear straddling the front corner of my truck. It barely kissed, but the ride was a life changer. I calculated the price of the possible damage: fender/light/bumper/underwear and found that the 500 dollar set was just about right. I wish I could have found a set of 14.9 x 28s for my Massey 65 but around here they are as rare as chicken lips. Here we are clearing the neighbors drive. My drive looks similar but stood on end...

From your place to NY (I checked when you said you had some) was pretty rich but it was US Mail.... UPS for a set from PA to MD was going to be 70 bucks... Maybe going the other direction is better???

Ended up getting mine from the link above and decent shipping.

Dave,

How did your chains look? Nice and solid? Plent thick on the cross chains? I'm in the same spot you were in a couple of weeks ago. I've dealt with the place you first mentioned and had "OK" service in the past but not so much this recent go round. When their price jumped over 10% after I called them I decided to wait and hope my differential lock is "enough" w/out the chains. I'm now thinking of getting some from the link you just posted, closer to the original price.

I need 16.9-34. I can get some 16.9-38 locally for an OK price also. I'm guessing that's just longer, and I can wrap them some extra? I can't try these on before, unfortunately.

One concern is I go to Peerless' site, and they sell the same chains for 15.5-38 as 16.9-34. I have some I ordered new for a 15.5-38 and I can stretch them on the wider tire but it doesn't feel safe and I think they'll walk off. Maybe the place I got them from sizes them for the 15.5-38 and peerless sizes them bigger for the 16.9-34 and doesn't make a smaller one for the 15.5-38 so recommend the bigger size?
