John Deere 2010 Engine Rebuild Pics

Hi all,

Just started my first tractor rebuild this past weekend. Snapped a few low quality pics with my phone. Thought I would share. Didn't take long to get it apart. Ran out of time before I could take then engine apart, but I know it spun the #1 rod bearing as I took the pan off and checked it before I split the tractor. Any helpful tips on this rebuild would be appreciated!

Thanks, hope you enjoy the photos,
Morgan

I,ll suggest that if you don't have one get an engine stand. You don't have to spend much for a basic one, and it goes a lot faster if you can quickly turn it over.

I'm working on a 1010 diesel that had a spun bearing on number one.Just got the engine back in the tractor yesterday, having the head checked before i put it back on.

I do have an engine stand.. they sure do come in handy for rebuilding. I'm trying to do it as cheaply as possible but I don't think I'll be coming away from this one cheap since parts are so high!

Nice shop! also like that overhead hoist. I wrestled mine and rolled it outside... This makes me want to clean up the garage some so I have some more room to work lol

As a former 2010 owner I can tell you I wasn't too thrilled with it. Never did have to rebuild the engine, though.

I see that's a gas engine as mine was. It got to where it wouldn't run without the choke out. Also rapidly burned out points. Turned out the switch was bad, new switch fixed those problems.

Transmissions give trouble sometimes with engaging gears. One adjustment is on the LH lower side of the transmission. As I recall, there is a bolts that can be adjusted. If the transmission shifts properly, don't touch that adjustment.

On the lower RH side of the transmission cas is the access plate for the hydraulic oil filter. It a brass and steel strainer affair, and can get clogged up to the point where ordinary washing in solven won't get it clean, even though it looks clean. Solution is a new filter. I think someone on here described a more serious cleaning method, maybe boiling in ammonia or something equally drastic but don't remember what it was.

The tractor gave much better service when it was kept sheltered.

Nice engine pics! I would like to paint mine while I've got it out but I'm not a restorer, I just like to use them and I probably wouldn't use it nearly as much if it looked nice lol.

I bought this tractor after the bearing had already spun. The guy had just put brand new tires front and rear and new brakes and a lot of other new stuff on it so when I get the engine fixed it should be good to go. I am debating on whether or not to keep it or sell it after I fix it. It has a loader and would be handy as a second loader tractor, but I also have a JD 3010 utility gas model with a loader that's awaiting a clutch and some transmission work that would probably be the better and heavier tractor. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the replies!

I think I got that for my birthday last year... we use it to haul firewood in our basement. You have to go through two interior doors to get wood to the furnace. Its handy for that. I wish the steering mechanism was a little stronger, but it serves its purpose. I cut a piece of plywood and put in the bottom so I wouldn't damage the mesh, and so that it would be a little sturdier :) It worked well.

Guy I worked for when I was in High School had one of those, didn't like to shift, towing a hay wagon back to the farm from the feild on a county trunk with out high gear was a near death experience, shortly after that it got traded away on a MF 255 diesel

When I got it, it was the first syncro-range transmission I had ever seen/driven, so it took some trial and error to get it off the trailer. I have since learned how to shift it, so it makes things so much easier! lol
