OT: Think I am just an email or two from getting ripped off.

My wife and I just bought a 2012 KIA Soul. Don't like sending our money to Korea, but she needs something big enough for her cleaning business that makes good MPG and is affordable. These look tiny on the outside but have lots of room inside.

Anyhow, they come with a "flat repair kit" instead of a spare tire. That thing is a joke, nothing more than a can of sealant that could ruin the TPMS sensor and a dinky air compressor.

I found 4 new take off tires and rims on Craigslist in Springfield, Missouri for $250.00

That is way too cheap for 4 with the TPMS sensors included. He says they are indeed the 195/65R15 I need.

Emailed the seller twice now. He won't give a phone number until a pick up location and time is established. Cash only.

I think I might just get knocked in the head if I do meet him. DOUG

If it doesn't feel right it probably isn't. Run as far away as you can. Chances are they were stolen off of someone else. Even someone who needs some quick cash would give you a phone number.

Dunno about yer deal but Kia has come along ways and may well be as well built a car that's out their... They are EZ to work on and all the OEM repair info is available on the net FREE...

That is a long drive just to get scammed,my experience with GL has been good but I have found a lot of bs too.(1 year old camper for $14,000.00 under book and it was in OK,just send money and he would tell me the address!)

Check with a local parts recycler, (aka junkyard), and have them keep an eye out or they may be able to locate one on teletype, (or whatever they use now), and have it shipped in.

He won't give you any details because the 4 take-offs are going to be yours when you get carjacked.

Similar thing happened here not too long ago when the latest Iphone came out. Ad said $300 cash only, when you couldn't get one for $500. They robbed 2 or 3 people before the cops caught up with them.

Hmmm $300 cash only, for a $500 phone, and you want to meet in the worst part of Flint, MI, I think I would pass.

Not anything that smells too bad to me. A lot of guys don't like to talk on the phone to strangers, myself included. Are the rims worth more than $250? Quite possibly. Is there a huge market for them at a higher value? No, not really.

Doug, I agree with you. If he were on the up and up, he would give a likely costumer his contact info. If he doesn't give you the opportunity to ask legitimate questions prior to sale, he is up to no good. I would immediately cease discusion with him. Even if he does change his tune, now, he has already ruined his credibility. This seller is clearly operating outside the circle of trust. I don't know if I'ld be worried about physical violence from him, as I roll through life under the questionable notion that I'm bulletproof, yet, if I weren't so sure of my bulletproofness, I would probably also think that violence is possible. Either way, I doubt his deal is as honorable as it ought to be.

If we talked on the phone to everyone that thought they wanted a horse or dog, we wouldn't get anything else done. Strictly email until they are ready to show up. Then they get a phone number to call if they are in traffic and will be late for the appointment.

We were never at war with South Korea and these vehicles are cheap and dependable. Wife has a sorento and I have a sportage that will get replaced with kia's when the time comes. If the stuff you found isn't far away, take a buddy with you and go...

Good luck.

Dave

For less money, just go to your dealer and buy 1 wheel. Why buy 4 when you only need 1, why run the risk of being ripped off, why not support the dealer who sold you the cat?

What did that KIA cost you? If you dont mind me asking. I just paid $23k for a new Ford Escape XLT with Front wheel drive only, 4 cylinder.

There is a reason many small cars don't have spares: Women drivers don't like to change tires. Since your wife is going to be the main driver, you should ask her if she really wants one. Where will you mount it? Is it going to take up cargo space?

You are smart to be careful when dealing with Craigslist sellers who give you any details. More than one bargain hunter has died during a craigslist sale that turned out to be a robbery.

You must know my wife..................

For Doug:

Do you folks have a decent roadside service like AAA or something? That shows up in a respectable time? If so, that'd be better than roses

Pretty spoiled as far as that goes here..... Hope you can cook......She mashes a finger while changing YOUR flat tire...... you's lookin at cherios and cup of soup......

On top of Dave's point that we weren't at war with South Korea, it's worth noting that KIA has spent something like $1.5 billion building facilities in North America and is just completing a major expansion of their assembly plant at West Point Ga. Should be building 2 models this year (Sportage and Optima IIRC) and the folks in West Georgia/East Alabama appreciate the jobs (somewhere around 4000 at this point between the plant and suppliers) all because North American demand for their vehicles meant it made more sense to start building some of them here.

When you breakdown what you spent on a car.. .yep some of the money makes it to South Korea. Your dealer gets to stay in business though cause he kept part of it... the US trucker that delivered kept his job another week... and a longshoreman somewhere got to buy Christmas presents. You're helping drive the economy, don't sweat where the $$ went... and realize if you'd bought something similar from the big three the $$ would have flowed somewhere other that strictly US too (at a minimum parts would have come from overseas... final assembly on a lot of things aren't stateside either).

As far as the tire patch, I would also carry the tools and supplies to plug a tire. I've emptied one of those sealant cans before with a flat and not worked.

The tire deal sounds fishy to me. Since he refuses to give his phone number, I get the fealing the tires are stolen. If your ok with that meet the guy in a very public place.

I wanted to add one more thing to this discussion.

It is a younger generation thing for the most part but many of us are ditching landlines in favor of cell phones. I don't know about you but I am pretty protective of my cell phone number. You need to keep in mind that when you give it out you are essentially providing permission for someone to interrupt your day at whatever time they like. I don't hand it out like candy at Halloween.

That said, most of my transaction details happen though email as well. I can better think out my answers, ask for and send additional pictures and can respond on my terms as far as time. When a time has been set up, then the buyer or seller gets my cell phone number in case they need to contact me while I or they are driving.

Embrace digital communication; it isn't going anywhere and it tends to be the preference of the younger generation(s).

Do not know about the other things, my friend just bought a new Mustang. It has the can, no jack, no lugwrench. It also says not to use the fix a falt in the manual. Go figure.
Ford says it's to improve mileage.
We are looking for a rim, tire and the tools.

dealer you bought it from, tell him you want spare tire an rim in deal.Do it all time here. why do you need four. we used to only carry three and that was on rural mail route, but since run ten ply tires all time now very rare have flat. fellow carrier had kia on mail route it didn,t last to long,it spent more tme dragging. I sure would NOT give the money to the missouri crook

I don't give out phone number untill last minute but it is due to hearing problems, seems as I have perhaps 10% left in right ear and 25% in left ear so when it gets that close then have wife do the talking. I however give a complete mailing address tho and it sounds to me like he is unwilling to do that so that would be more of a problem for me. And then how did he get takeoffs?

$250.00 for tires and wheels takeoffs? that"s a bit more than local salvage yard charges-- the range is $20.00 to $50.00 each except something like the newest wierd 17 inchers- and then the price may be $75.00 to $100.00 compared to dealers $300.00 to $400.00. I got newer cast 15 inch wheels with near new tires for the Olds and Chev minivans used for church family hauling- $50.00 instead of $170.00 for wheel alone from dealer- I don"t like the space savers provided- especially after 2 flats incident. CL seller may have a set of stolen, may have set off a crushed wreck, may have a set of fancy wheels and tires that were replaced by heavy steel wheel with higher profile tires used for commercial use-- my style mini van is also used by taxi and handicapped transport here- and they all have pressed steel and high profile tires for hazard protection, might not look as fancy or corner at high speed but they last and don"t blow on potholes or crack like cast wheel when they hit a curb. When you email back- note that responses should have a second address/name CC as "deputyX@ SouthSherrifStation" indicating/implying you are law enforcement officer. RN

Already did. Closest one is in Indiana, by the time he has it shipped it is $110.00. That is the bare rim, no sensor. I have not called the dealer about the sensor yet, but I know that a new rim from the dealer is $132.xx.

Most sensors are 50 to 60 bucks, so at $185 or more without a tire. Add the tire, you are at the $250.00 the seller is asking for all 4.

Too good to be true. DOUG

Carry a patch kit, About 10.00 for a good kit in our parts. Jack it, air it to find the leak. Patch and go.

It's actually very easy, keep a blanket or something to lay or sit on for the repair.

It is the base model, but that doesn't mean it isn't well equipped with options. I actually prefer the base because it uses 15 inch tires instead of 16's or 18's. The lower the tire profile gets the harder they ride, been there, done that.

No power seats, or heated seats. No sunroof. Otherwise it has everything you could want and then some, including USB port, bluetooth through the radio for hands free cell phone, satellite radio built in (we won't renew, but it is there), etc.

List price was $16,650. We bought it through Shottenkirk (Quincy, IL) internet sales for $15,945.

They treated us OK on our trade, it had wheel bearing, strut, and brake issues, plus hail damage.

We contacted our insurance company (Amica) the week before we traded it (2006 Chevy HHR, 123K miles) in.

Adjuster came out, we had a check for the hail damage in 5 days. But, getting off subject. DOUG

I don't like using plugs, but might carry my plug
kit with me until I get the full size spare.

We will be making a quick 2 day 800 mile round trip
in a few days, obviously don't want to say when
because I never know who might be watching my
postings. I have good neighbors that would call if
anything looks out of the ordinary, and have let
them know when I am gone. DOUG

It will fit perfectly in the space provided for it. I have been on a KIA Soul web group, and the 15's/16's fit in the spare tire carrier just fine.

The 18 inch option does not, it will drop into the well easy enough but is too wide.

Yes, my wife does want a full size spare. Also, we do have AAA roadside service, but out here they are kind of a joke. DOUG

I dont see anything in your post that would tip me off to being set up. Not everybody wants to phone-a-friend. Im not up on what a fair price for your rims are but that price dont look too far off what I would guess to be normal (I have been watching for a second set of rims on craigslist myself so I look over autoparts every day). Like you said, they are 15s and a little bit of an odd size 15 at that. If it was a reasonable drive from me, I would go for it.

If you think you are going to get ripped off, I would give 10-1 odds that it will be in the amount of tread on the tires. When people on craigslist sell tires, "brand new takeoffs" seem to always have 2/32 or 3/32 of tread missing. Funny how a tire that wasnt driven and "even still has the nubbies" on it in the listings can lose so much tread. "Half wore out" tires are lucky to not touch Lincolns head.

Have you checked junkyards? I dont think the ones around here even charge extra for tire monitors. If you are just getting steelies for a common 15 inch, Im not sure they would even know to look. Here, a steel rim is $20. $30 or more, dependin on tread, if you want the tire thats on it. Thats you pulling the part price, no idea what it is if you call and have them pull it.

One other thing for you to consider is that the you are going to want to take the sensor out of the spare. Most vehicles are not location sensitive meaning it looks for 4 streams of input. Some of the vehicle sensors are turned on centrifigully when the wheel spins but most of them use a radio frequency (think ipass technology). If you have an extra data stream from the wheel in the trunk the system will freak and start flashing lights. I sometimes transport my second set of wheels in my car and the tpms light freaks out when I do so.

This is why the compact spare tires don't have a tpms sensor in them. They use a higher pressure so the system wouldn't compute well.

As an aside, most companies are taking them out of the cars. They weigh a lot and with modern tire technology people don't experience enough flats to make it worth carrying around.
