55 Tons of Stolen Corn from a Moving Train!

Country of Brazil. According to reports; theives greased the tracks to slow, or stop the train; then attached a large vehicle to the rail car(s). Then siphoned out the grain. 55 US tons out of about 66 tons. What could be next?

If thievery was as popular here as it is in most 3rd world countries nothing would be safe. Shoot, the elevator in town has huge PILES of corn. No security, no fences, no lighting. In Brazil the natives would cart it off in wheelbarrows while we slept.

How many gallons of ethanol does 55 tons make? That's what they were after. A railcar with gasoline here isn't much safer... they probably don't have pure gas engines down there anymore.

Many feel that these things happen in those places because they are a poor third world country. I however fell that they are a poor third world country because they have no regard for law & order.

So far, the guvment has been able to compensate for the declining economy by increasing benefits to the masses. But that is ballooning the deficit, and it can't go on forever, despite the best efforts of the politicians (all the while protesting to the contrary). When it all comes crashing down, we'll be amazed at how fast the downtrodden catch up with the third world in inventive looting and pillaging.

Many of the experts are recommending we invest in metals. Gold, silver, and lead.

Kinda like "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" Don't entirely agree with you, but I can appreciate the logic in it, and it more than likely is a contributing factor.

That isnt that many bu so its no big deal and where did that source come from. Talk about stealing how about the wesr coast solar panel rip-off and the other big Global thingy your talking Billions just the pay-off from the solar panel deal to the employes will cost 14mill so 55 tons of corn is pocket change compared to whats going on here.

"thieves greased the tracks"

No doubt they greased a few palms too. Taxes or graft, all works out the same in the end.

55 tons of corn would yield about 5,600 gallons of ethanol and 34,000 lbs of DDGs. However, typically ethanol production in Brazil is from sugar cane.

100 pounds of corn in a 50 gallon hog's head will be 12-14% alcohol. You'll have to take over from there because I can't seem to remember how to convert percents to decimals

Around here we aren't concerned with how much ethanol it would make, we are more concerned about how much "shine" it would make! LOL

I gotta call BS on this, trains have a lot of momentum, so you'd have to grease about a half mile or more of track to get it to stall. Not to mention locomotives have sanders that can spray sand under the wheels to get traction on slippery rails. That would have to be quite a well equipped operation to transfer that much grain. And with it being such a low cost commodity I can't see any point in it. It would make more sense if they were stealing gas or deisel. But robbing containers with electronics is more likely.

I have to agree. Theives are too lazy to grease a mile or two of RR tracks and aren't willing to spend that much money (grease aint cheap) to steal only 55 tons of grain.

The only way greasing a HALF mile of track would stop a train is if it weren't moving very fast, on an uphill grade.

Seems to me like an awful lot of trouble to go to for what is still a fairly inexpensive commodity... and 55 TONS?

This isn't some desperate poor guy trying to feed his family. We're talking an "Ocean's Eleven" style heist here.
