James W. Wellons died yesterday in Charleston SC. He was in the Navy serving on board the Battle Ship Texas when the war began. He was on an LST in the Pacific when it ended. He served during Korea as He was in the reserves and retired as a Chief in the 80s. He was the father of my first wife.He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Over 1000 WW2 vets are dying everyday. Very sad, both my grandfathers are dead, both WW2 vets.

The last WW1 vet died back in March he was 110 years old.

Yes i am sure he will be sorely missed. Sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my grandfather who was also a WW2 vet about a month ago. Take care and God bless!!

Condolences to your family... My father passed away several years ago he was a WWII Vet.

Ordinary Americans with extraordinary courage..

You and your family have my sincere condolonces, Ron. It sounds like Chief Wellons led a long and eventful life. He has my admiration and respect.

I lost my Mother, a WWII veteran in May of 2009. She served as a nurse in McArthur's army in New Guinea and the Philippines. She met my Father in Leyte Gulf in early 1945.

It is sad to see the WWII veterans passing in such numbers. Time waits for no one.

Both of my late brother-in-law's served during WW2, Korean War and Nam. They were in the active reserves after WW2 and were recalled to active duty in 1950 and stayed in til they retired. One was CWO in the Army the other a Master Sgt in the Air Force. Also had 3 uncles that served during WW2. My brother and I were in during the Korean War. Two of my Army buddies died 10 years ago. Incredible isnt it. His last name was Buckles if I remember right. I think he died while in a nursing home.....I dont think he was farming at 110.

One of great grandfathers was put on a troop transport ship to fight "the great war" in 1917 but he ate soup from a can that was sealed with lead solder and he got a bad case of lead poisoning and was sent back to the US on a hospital ship. My Great granddad was born in 1898, and he died on Christmas day in 1974, I was 5 then.

Guru,You are correct, his farm is still operational,He lived on the farm just about to the time of his death, and as far as I know only visted a nursing home prior to his death. He was in control right up to his last days.Weve had several farmers live past there 100 birth day in this area.I just did a funeral for a good friend that did farm labor work up to the last year that he died,He was 93
