We've got a 2000 Chevy Silverado with a 5.3L gas motor. The last couple mornings we have noticed an anti-freeze smell inside. Leads me to believe a leaking heater core. Don't see anything leaking though. Anybody have a problem with their core leaking or is there another "problem area" on this year vehicle like a fitting that goes bad often or something like that. Easy or hard to change the core?

The heater core is either really hard or very easy. According to Mitchel, if it has an access panel, 1.1 to replace the core. If it doesn't have an access panel, then 4.7 to replace the core.

If are smelling coolant most likly the heater core is leaking. The heater core is all day job. have to pull the dash. lots of screws. The only had part will be disconnecting the heater hoses. Need a tool to release the connector. Presure test first, coolant pumps are very commin.

CMan, I replaced the heater core on my silverado four times before i learned the cause was the intake leaking, Needed gaskets so i had the intake and head gaskets replaced with felpro and i now have 218K on engine and no more heater core problems. Good luck. James
