Looking for some tricks on getting a 1941 Allis WC to start better cold. Any tricks would be appreciated. Jeff. PS It starts good when it is warmer outside.

How cold is "cold"? What color is your spark at the spark plug electrodes? If your spark doesn't have "blue snot authority" don't be surprised if your engine doesn't start in cold weather. My guess is that you have the original magneto ignition? We need more info.

Many things come into play on this problem. 6 or 12 volts makes a difference as to how it starts and how to maybe fix. Other things like mag or distributor?? Things you need to check are how is your spark?? Is it a nice blue/white color and will it jump a 1/4 inch gap or more?? Also is the air cleaner clean and full of oil like it should be or is it full of dirt and water?? Another thing is to start when cold they need more fuel so opening up the main jet a 1/2 turn or so may help

"How cold is "cold"?" is a good question.....such as below freezing? You could have some barely noticable ice crystal in the fuel.

Check the normal things compression, valve settings, Mag or distributor timing, Check for good spark and fuel delivery, and the condition of the spark plugs.

Bought an old WC back in the 70’s that had the battery box rusted out so did not have a battery installed I bought it with the intentions of building a battery box and putting in a new battery but that old gal would start with the hand crank in our Nebraska winters when nothing else on the place would without heating and charging, so I used it for about 5 years and never did build a battery box. In my experience I would expect a well-tuned WC to be an easy starter.

An old time mentor use to tell me “If you have Spark, fuel, oxygen, compression, and correct timing she will run”.

if 6 volt starter on 12 volts some times mag spins too fast for impulse thus weaker spark at start

And a 6 on a dist with improperly sized wires will pull so much juice for the starter that the dist never gets enough to make a hot spark. My WD with 12v and dist will start in colder weather than I care to be out in with nothing more than some choke.
