Has anyone ever ate one of them ugly birds?

Do they taste like chicken?

Neighbor always had some running around years ago but I don't ever remember him eating them.

With the noise those things make. They get rid of everything. Had some when I was a kid. Make great watch animals. Nothing getting within a mile or your place. If I remember correctly had eggs like golf balls.

I was told that you had to get them after they settled down at roost and shoot them in the head. Said that if they got excited, the meat would turn blue and tuff...... Don't know if that's true, but I had 6 once and the neighbors would get upset because they made so much noise. Shot them in the head, one a night. Wife made them like a turkey and they were pretty tasty.

Great watch dogs, but doen't taste like chicken. Their meat is very dark and not very palatable , bout like eating crow. Joe

We had to keep them to keep our goats healthy. Here in our part of New York, land snails are the host for several diseases that goats get. Guinea hens keep our place snail-free.

Biggest problem I've had is keeping them around. All ours have gotten "wander lust" after a year or two old and head for the woods and never return,

We had only one ever come back home and that's because she was bloody and missing one leg.

We used to raise 1200 phesants, 500 turkeys, 500 chickens. Guineas may not be the best eating, but they are the best to keep on the farm. I made the mistake of getting only two of them...ended up dying from exhaustin as one is always on duty guarding the place. Now I have a half dozen. They rid mice, rats, hawks, turkey buzzards, weasels, racoons, etc., kinda like having your own army. Best part is their screeking bother the wife!

Man; I give you a lot of credit for being able to stomach the noise those birds make, hour after hour of it .Dad had 6 of them for about a year until he owed up to not being able to stand all that noise.Prior to them being given away he claimed they were better than a wide awake dog for guarding the place.Maybe so but it took a long time before any of us got to enjoy a full night of sleep after he brought them home in a bucket and they grew up. Some one gave them to him when they were real small.

We've been keeping a flock of 10 to 20 for the past few years. They really help keep the ticks at bay. They are good watchdogs, but they sure has heck don't scare away skunks or raccoons. I lose a lot of them to predators which is why I've never had extra birds to try eating them. Their eggs are small and very hard shelled and they usually won't lay them in next boxes, but they are the most delicious eggs I've ever eaten (probably because of all the insects in their diets).

I was told that they are a delicacy in some upscale restaurants (pheasant under glass).

We had them back in the late 1940's on the farm til my brother and I entered the military in the early 1950's. The farm was sold and my late dad worked for a chemical company. They would sure sound off if any strangers were around. We ate them too and it wasn't easy catching them. Hal

We had guineas at home. They taste a little on the gamey side like pheasant. Good tasting. Ours were gray with white speckled on them. Noisy but good guard bird.

we had a few. They would lay eggs under a bush and hatch out tiny chicks and stomp everyone to death. Mothers worse than ducks.
